I cannot recall the reason why it happens a thrust bearing issue I think, but it is movement in the crank. On old vw's I grew up with you could pull/push the pulley and it would move. Too much and I it destroys everything. No idea why the manual 3200 suffers more though tbh.
Clutch arrangement, puts more pressure on it.

When on song, the 3200 is an awesome car. Full (real,) leather, almost hand built, remember it put Maserati back where it belonged. Yes it can be problematic, usually down to lack of use, or lack of maintenance. A proper Italian Mistress! Lol
