Looking forward to decanting this later, brought it with me to France as a nudge to its first introduction to the world in Paris.
It has gained popularity over the years but still relatively unknown. Cabernet Sauvignon is not usually grown in Spain.
It’s a complete powerhouse of a wine and when it first burst onto the scene in 1979, Mas La Plana gained first place at Gault Millau Olympiade du Vin in Paris with the 1970 vintage tasted blind against all the first growth Bordeaux Chateaux of that vintage, such as Lafite, Latour, Mouton, Margaux and Haut-Brion. To the complete astonishment of all the judges it totally blew the competition away. Needless to say, the French were not happy!
What a wild card to thrown in the mix with the ‘big boys’
I’ve had most vintages of Mas la Plana over the years included the ‘70. The 2005 is generally considered one of the star vintages and needs time to open up, couple of hours in a decanter.
Definitely an eye opener if you can find a bottle or two.
