What car should I buy?

Wife's focus is giving up the ghost.

Clutch went. I paid for a new one. A pipe in the engine burst. I replaced it.

Now one of the rear doors won't open. The opening mechanism has snapped I think. Not sure I can fix it because I can't even open the door to take the door card off!!!

Think it might be time to get her a new car. Her birthday is next week.

So what to get?

The criteria is:
1. 4 door
2. Petrol
3. Good sized boot to carry 2 strollers
4. Not really interested in a 4x4
5. No more than £10k.
6. I would like to feel happy if I have to drive it!

So a hatch basically, surely the Golf is the class leader and a good car to drive. A nice TFSI engine (1.4) sees great economy and performance.

Clowns car!!!

I don’t disagree - just wanted to give an alternative choice. Having looked at the ad, I can’t work out how they call it a 5dr, as it seems to only have front doors, and then the two doors that open up the boot...

If I were looking for a car with Hoyin’s criteria it would be hard to look beyond a decently specced Golf, or a slightly older BMW 1 or 3 series

Golf or A3. Depends on which one your wife prefers. The colour will probably be the clincher...

Two front doors, two rear doors and a suicide door to the back seats on the driver's side. Even as a Clubman, not sure there would be sufficient space but I actually think that's a decent choice. Or a Focus in some form of ST spec with Mountune... either would meet criteria number 6, no? More fun than a Golf I reckon.

All Germanic, although they do seem to have this sector tied up.

My choices would be 3 Series tourer or another Golf / A3 variant the Seat Leon, generally a bit more sporty for the budget

I've ordered a Cupra estate from those guys for only £180 p/m...

Good luck, we had terrible trouble trying to get a Leon Estate from Seat, eventually we gave up and swapped to an Octavia. That was at the beginning of the year when they were switching models so supply might have improved by now.

Strollers? So I'm guessing you want something modern for passive safety to look after your family - ideas of Alfasuds and the like need to be put from my mind.

Apart from the recent gremlins has the Focus ownership been a reasonable experience? I've rented a lot of hatches recently: Polo, Ibiza, Peugeot something, Punto but the one which stood out head and shoulders above the rest was the Fiesta.

The 3-pot is hilarious fun, actually sounds like a V6 when pressed, goes faster than you will expect and the ride quality is simply the best. The 3-pot is really lightweight and makes the road-holding and chuckability absolutely grin-inducing. You can drive it like a boring shopping hatchback, it's quiet and comfortable; or you can also rag the nuts off it and it's brilliant fun.
