Tyre Sizes QP 2008 - Newbie Bravery :-)

I'm new to the forum, and have done quite a big trawl on tyres and have established that most owners do not like Pirellis, but haven't found the specific info I need. So apologies if I have missed it!

I've had my 2008 QP for about a year now, and the tyres are now coming up for replacement. It is currently fitted (as bought) with Pirelli 235/50 ZR18 101Y both front and rear on original Maserati rims, and I noticed the front hubs on the wheel are slightly different to the rears. This prompted me to check what should be fitted, and I've established from multiple sources it should be 245/45 R18 front and 285/40 R18 rear. The fronts are easy to source.

As I am sure is common knowledge (I didn't know) the rears seem to be a special Pirelli size which is very hard to find, and in second mortgage territory. Plus I don't really like Pirellis either! So what is the general recommendation for a close equivalent on size and reasonable availability? Looking at 275/40 or 275/45 as closest fit, though suspect 45s could be a bit too big. Similarly a 285/35 may be a bit small.

Any recommends on sizes gratefully received.

Also, I will get the suspension alignment checked next time it is serviced, but can I expect any odd behaviours or issues going back to near-correct sizes before I can get that bit done? It has Skyhook suspension. The only slight excess wear is currently the front inners, and not of particular concern.

Thanks in advance.

What does the manual recommend for 18's?

Michelen PS4 Sports. I've just had four fitted but not really been able to go anywhere to get a feel for them but they are certainly better than the Pirelli P-Zero's on before.

Manual (mine's 2006) says....

285/40/ZR18 rear

245/45/ZR18 front

Michelin Pilot Sports or Pirelli P Zero Rosso

For winter as above but VR18 Pirelli Snow Sports.

Rims are 10.5"J 18" rears, 8.5"J 18" fronts

Got 19's on mine though....

Yup, manual says 285/40 ZR18 hence I'm looking at close suitable alternative sizes as I don't want to be stuck with Pirelli's (at any price) and also haven't been able to source any within 100+ miles of home (North Wales). I know strictly speaking should match the manual, but seeing as it isn't at the moment anything will be an improvement.

I am less fussed with the brand, have liked Falkens on a few other cars in the past, I've never liked Good Year, Uniroyal, or Pirelli.

Very surprised a 235 tyre has been stretched onto a 10.5 inch rim.

Tyre choice is subjective IMO. I have Pirellis on mine and they are fine in warmer weather but can be fun in tthe wet and cold -- but I have winter tyres for this ... so am quite happy with PZeros in the summer.

That said, I may change brand when they are worn out .

I had exactly the same problem when I bought the QP V nearly 4 years ago, and I don't think there's been much improvement on the supply of 18" tyres since then. I also switched to 19" which is much easier to source (you can go to 20" - depending on your ride preference).

Yes indeedy! Have just re-checked and I am not seeing things - 235/50 ZR18 all round - and with the tape measure have confirmed the rear rims are 10.5" and front 8.5". So some tyre fitter somewhere has been a bit reckless to put it mildly. With hindsight, now wish I'd dug deeper on the tyres before last year's flat-out 4-up Autobahn trip :O

Now that I am out and mobile again (I live in Wales so have been under house arrest for a while!), it's time to get the tyres changed.

Intention is 275/45/18 on the back (instead of 285/40/18) due to high cost and that I don't like Pirelli. I've checked the dimensions and it's within 3% of the original spec, could possibly have got 285/35 but they're 5% difference and I prefer comfort over a low profile. Have ruled out 19/20 for the same reason.

So two questions - Is that a reasonable substitute? And I've shortlisted to Goodyear Eagle F1 for front and back - any experiences with those, or recommended alternatives?

Thanks as always.

I've had the Michelins on now front and rear and they are ace - 1k miles no perceivable wear, quieter and don't tramline.....

£800 or so for the four.

Can you get tyres online and have them fitted locally? I used blackcirles last time but plenty of choice.
My QP has 20" so different choices but have used mainly P-Zeros and find them okay. Would try pilot PS4 next time

Yes, Blackcircles or Tyre-shopper have good coverage locally and decent prices. Neither list the OE 285/40/18 size though, only one I can find is ATS at £352 a piece! Might look at the Pilot too.

I've previously had good experiences with Falken on a variety of cars including a Daimler V12, but not much coming up in the sizes I need. Will take the plunge in the next couple of weeks...

Recently bought new rears from Camskill. They were cheaper than Blackcircles. I had delivered though and not fitted as part of purchase.

get mine delivered to home or delivered to local garage in the village for fitting as it suits me. Many smaller garages have limited space and 20" rubber takes up huge space. Tried getting them inside your car? :D

Yeah 1 in boot, 1 on backseat! Huge.
