TRack day insurance

Hi all,

I have an 2005 4200 and have been looking at taking it on a track day. However the cost of insurance seems very high - the last quote I got from a specialist track day insurer was £250 for the day (that's a day on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, with the car valued at £20k). Does anyone have any advice on whether this is reasonable - or anywhere to go for a better deal? My current insurer (Admiral) doesn't do track days, even for an extra premium.

Any advice or experience welcome!

Thanks,
Ben.

Hi Ben, can not help with a company but 250 sounds not far off the mark...You may get it a bit cheaper but I know a few who have had TD insurance and it was about the same....

I do the odd track day and have never had insurance but you pay your money and take your choice.....I find track days very safe and safer than being on the road and as long as you drive within your limits you should be safe...........The trouble is when you put insurance onto the price of a track day it gets very expensive but then if you bang your pride and joy if could cost a fortune............So its personal choice really......I can understand why you want to insure your pride and joy........

Hi Ben and welcome to the forum and more over, kudos for looking to track your 4200. I've taken my 4200 on a few now and the car is very capable.

Have you seen we have a track event in a couple of weeks? Check out the events thread if you're interested.

As for insurance, it depends on the track and the company your in. If you're amongst friends on a track with good run-off, then I wouldn't bother, but I'm sure AndyK our resident track day organiser will be along with sage advice.

I've just had a quote from MWA for my forthcoming 4200CC at £580... Which includes free track day cover!

Crikey - what a friendly forum! Just checked out the thread about Llandow - but to be honest it's quite a hike for me (Wimbledon - which is 178 miles each way according to Google, assuming I've found the right Llandow of course). That makes it an overnighter and I have other plans that weekend. I'll keep an eye for the next one though!

Thanks for the advice so far - I've never done a track day in my own car before, so I suspect I'll insure for the first one and see how it goes. I've done a couple of other track days where you drive the cars they supply (Audi TT's, and some single seaters) which was fun and nobody that I saw came near to crashing, but taking a car I can't afford to replace to a track where it's completely uninsured makes me nervous!

mjheathcote - that's impressively cheap for insurance - I'm paying about £1k for mine (37 and living in SW London) but I'm not sure how much no claims it's worked on given it's a second car.

Parisien - thanks for the link - I'll check them out.

Cheers,
ben.

Ben i did Llandow in the summer for the first time and i took a Honda Civic EK4 vtech that i paid pennys for and trust me best fun we had i double drove her with my 20 year old lad and we had great fun.
Best bit of comeing on one of Andys well organised days is that we are all gentlemen out there.

Ben,

I used Moris track day insurance last year. You will find their website on line.

Ben,

I also used Moris for an MSV novice trackday in my Z4M last year at Cadwell Park. Cost was £118 with £1500 excess for the car valued at £17k, Group 20 insurance on the road, with me having done 1 other previous trackday.

Cheers

Thanks Duncan - that's much cheaper. I'll give them a call. I've decided to risk going without insurance for the forum track day next week, but I don't think I'm comfortable with a track full of randoms if I book a Brands Hatch day so still need some cover for that one.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi Ben,

It's not just other people I was worried about, my own driving also!!

Especially at Cadwell park where the steering went very light and the back end very mobile gunning it over the 'mountain'! Squeaky bum time....:scared3:

Good luck with the trackday!

Cheers
Duncan

If anyone's policy is almost up, I am with Competition Car Insurance through Bridle insurance brokers 023 8087 5070. The cover is £500 per year for upto 6000 miles and includes 5 trackdays.

I took park in the charity supercar event at Castle Combe in 2010. It was a great day but at times the track resembled a skating rink with some participants emulating Torville and Dean and then leaving the track involuntarily! In one case a poor chap managed to redecorate his car. Not too serious but enough to dent his wallet. I didn't need to make a claim (touch wood) but I was glad to have insurance cover for the day.

I think you will be fine at Llandow...Is not a bif fast track where as if you go to Brands or Goodwood you can get up some stunning top speeds and then if you loose it you could struggle to catch it....Don't get me wrong..You drive like a twit at Llandow and you will still do some damage but it is a very safe track day.....
