Touch Up

Now the better weather is here, I've decided to spend some time on minor stone chips and scratches that polishing alone won't hide. But I can't imagine my local Halfords is going to stock the stuff I will need for my Quattroporte.

This looked a good option... www.chipex.co.uk/kit/select/

Any good/bad experiences with touch up paints and kits in general?

Seems a tad expensive for what it is. Most people will have half that stuff in the garage anyway. I get mine from Car Workshop Consumables on ebay. Always been a perfect colour match.

I'm sure someone has used that on here....Matt maybe.....Gave good coverage and from a distance looked good but up close you could still see but I thin overall they were pleased.

Halfords mix up touch-up kits in store, and did one easily for mine.
They just need the paint colour, they look it up on the PC, and vola!

ChipEx is a load of old b0llox.

Get a permanent marker and touch in then polish. On black it works amazingly well.

If you have more time, get it mixed from Halfords and mix it 50/50 with lacquer, when dry (takes a week to go off fully) wet sand it with 2000 grit and polish up with 3M compound or similar.

in my experience Chipex works very well on isolated stone chips & the paint match is excellent. Its not so good if you are treating a lot of chips or gravel rash. It can take a lot of effort to remove the excess paint with the blending solution & if you're not really careful the blending solution can end up removing all the touch up paint you have just applied. If only the italians could apply paint properly, a friend has a Volvo with over 100000 miles & there's barely a mark on it, on the other hand my Alfa 147 has 60000 miles & the gravel rash is terrible

I've just ordered some touch up paint for my Alfa GT. direct from Alfa its £25. So it doesn't make chip ex that expensive. If it works.

However, I found one from another Alfa dealer for £14. Bargain. Which then makes it expensive. If it works of course.

Alfas have unique paint, made of the softest, weakest materials known to man. My old GT's front bumper was terrible, absolutely covered in road rash. I never bothered having it painted as I knew it would end up just the same. My 159 isn't too bad, but it's definitely been painted in the past.

I'm thinking a visit to Halfords is the sensible option then. We'll see if I'm brave enough to wet sand though!

A paint factor would offer you a better match by taking a reading from your car rather than just using the manufacturer code, paints dull over time due to sunlight etc, so for a perfect match you need someone to take a reading from your car. They would also offer to provide the other chemicals you'd need for blending, laquering etc and the price would be far less than either halfrauds or chipex.
