This week I have a cracked windscreen.

So, where's best to get it replaced? Gavin from Autoglass for £50 or Maserati for god knows how much?

I had Autoglass do the one on the Lotus a couple of years ago and it must be their own brand or something as it's not as good as the original, it possible to specify a Maserati screen from Autoglass?

Not sure if you can specify a manufacturers replacement - however my wife's BMW Mini needed a new windscreen - autoglass promptly bodged a replacement for £75 - later that very day the rubber came out, flapped about and damaged the paintwork on the roof.
Very apologetic Autoglass replaced screen with a BMW Genuine part and resprayed the roof.
The car was still in warranty - BMW would not accept liability as non genuine parts had been used

Oh yes you can or at least i did , after a fiasco with autoglass trying to fit a new passenger door glass, i insisted via Apaln that a Main dealer do it , they agreed and the car went to HR Owen , job done , push for it Dan and you will get it done by main dealer , there are no copiy parts for these all screens and glass come via Maserati Italy if there's none in uk , Autoglass were that useless they were quoting me 10 days for the glass , 2 phone calls and i found one at Maranello egham for £38

Autoglass replaced my mothers windscreen on her Merc, i dont think it is an official Merc item as it is know where near as good as the original, seems to chip and scratch a lot more easily.

When i worked at the Ferrari and Porsche specialist, there was Murcielago which was a frequent visitor, the owner needed a new windscreen, 5k all in. Ouch.

Right then, I've spoken to my insurance company (Admiral Multicar) and they say that as the car is under 3 years old I'm entitled to a dealer part.
However, I have to use National Windscreens and pay a £70 excess. I asked them about using Autpglass instead (not that I have a particular desire to use them) and they said that I would have to pay them in full for the work and they would then refund me up to £50.... so, looks like I'll be using National Windscreens then.

National Windscreens / Autoglass - same thing really, its just whoever has the deal with your insurance company. Thats not a bad deal - you will always have to pay an excess, it used to be £50 but most insurance companies now charge £70 or £75. Good news it does NOT affect your no claim bonus and your going to get a dealer part.

Id sling it into Meridien to be done then they will only use people who they trust. It may well be NW but either way, the fitter will take extra care and the dealer is on hand to advise.

Seeing as they will do the work at whatever location I specify, that may well be a plan.
I'll speak with Meridian and see what they advise.

I would definitely demand a Maserati screen glass, no matter who fits it. We all know Maserati are not a glass maker, but they would have a specific type and quality specified. Travelling at 170mph and the screen implodes, not good.

Dan thats what they tried on with me , on speaking to Tony Vacaro at Ownes he just said leave it with them , he phoned the insurance company and agreed with them and arranged a curtasy car for me , apparently the insurance companies are breaking the law by saying that but they always try it on to force you down their route its not legal even tio tell you that you have to pay up front , push for your case , im sure Meridian have been through this a hundred times like Owens and know exactly how to deal with them

something hit it? :)

Not always the case Adam , my gransport started a crack from the very top left hand side about 1 cm , partly under the seal , it grew around 6 inches in one day for no apparent reason , wondered whether at some time i had hit a pothole and it had flexed or something , that was 2 years ago and since its been done its been fine, glass can be an anomily in itself , i can remember as kid me dear old Mum bless , bought a new set of pyrex plates and stuff , one by one over 6 months they would explode generally when in the cupboard for no apparent reason , we kind of got used to it after the first time but the cubes were everywhere when it went , just like old windscreen glass ]

I started as a stone chip, but in a very odd place. It was just behind the wiper.
I can only assume that a stone hit it whilst the wipers were on, 1:1,000,000 chance.
