I've just had my car inspected by Mike at Roberts Aerospace for someone who wants to buy it (other than a few minor issues, it passed everything). One thing that confused Mike immensely was that my car is a series 2 model, with all the OEDB connectors yet seems to have a series 1 engine with no secondary air/EGR system. He contacted Maserati and it appears that my car is a transition model of which only 20 were made and only 2 in RHD. The other RHD car is Assy 4451/ CH 3236 (mine is Assy 4454/Ch 3276). Mine may well be the only car of it's kind in the UK! :)

I've had my car serviced at main dealers and specialists and no one has ever spotted this oddity. Mike surely knows his stuff!! It will be a real shame to sell the car - hopefully the buyer will back out... ;)

Good to see you have found a buyer - even if you would rather not sell.

I have a similar situation with an Alfa 164 I own, it was a crosover model with bits from the models either side and a few bits individual to it which has been a bit of a nightmare at times.

Must be an Italian thing... Years ago I had a Fiat Regatta (ok i know just don't laugh too much) that was 'post production' to say the least, I think they had some body shells over so just stuck all sorts of bits onto it to make a car that ran. It had a really great trim level (for the model) but cloth seats, half of the electrical pack so electric windows but manual wing mirrors although they were wired in! I also had no fuel save on the carb so it burbled on lift off and crackled all the way down! The indicators were from the very first model as well. It also had a load of bits from other Fiats and Lancias. It was easier to take bits into the motor factors to identify than try and go off the vehicle reg/vin.

Yup......thye just used up the bits left over if they hadn't quite received the up-dated versions.......IMHO....all sorts of variations as I found out last year whn I needed a rear hub bearing changed!

I suppose it's understandable if they had excess series 1 engines when they switched over to series 2. Are there any great benefits to having an EGR?

Now try not to laugh, but I had a TVR S version 2.5 (some where between a 2 and a 3) and when i started renovating it i discovered they had mixed imperial and metric brake fittings with some of the brake pipes metric one end and imperial other to make adapters!! So the Italians are not the only ones.

Yes quite normal, going from one series to another for a period cars having a mix of both.
In the Triumph Stag world you have a series 1, series 1.5(!) and series 2.

...another good example is the Porsche 928.
The series 2 jumped to the series 4. But at the end of the series 2 production they fitted the better series 4 suspension etc, known as a series "86.5" referring to the middle of 1986. Those that want the S2 looks, it's the one to go for!

so thats the secret of the special Assys mentioned for several of parts: e.g.
Part No. 383800116
-Valid for GS till Assy. Nr.4445 and for Assy. Nr.4491,4499 and 4500
-Valid for GD till Assy. Nr.4468 and for Assy. Nr.4451 and 4454-

or the inverse Part No. 383801116
-Valid for GS from Assy. Nr.4446 not for Assy. Nr.4491,4499 and 4500
-Valid for GD from Assy. Nr.4469 not for Assy. Nr.4451 and 4454-
