Next thing youre going to say is you used to go to 'Rafters" nightclub on Oxford road
( opposite the old Odeon), or "Tommy Ducks," or "The Shady Lady", opposite the BBC, or Rosie's wine bar next to the Brittania Hotel on Piccadilly square. Those were the days......I was in Manchester when 'The Smiths' first appeared on the scene....

If Manchester in the 1980s wasn’t depressing enough, Morrissey turned up and starting singing. Argh!

I saw Joy Division back then, in Bolton actually, not M/cr, 79 I think. Wasn't a fan bit I was after.

Saw REM at The Gallery 83/84, video on Youtube, 80p entrance. SLF and U2 back then at the Beach Club and Ardwick Apollo, grim, but vibrant. Before Hacienda which put Manchester on the map but made it a very dangerous place to even hang around.

Great venues, Band on the Wall, Rafters (never went there), all the Internationals, the Ritz, others I cant remember, many times had to walk home the 12 miles at 3:00am from M/cr to Bolton cos no trains, buses or taxis then. I can feel my feet hurting now for I was wearing unsuitable shoes...

Worth it though, cos I saw it.

There's worse than Morrissey, there's The Fall, they are fooking awful, no one will convince me they have any talent at all, utter shiite.....

It'd be a bit grim if we all liked the same things, Wanderer, but coming from the north I'd have thought The Fall would be right up your ginnel.
I know mate, just a bit of levity, I suppose it's cos my whole family is proper musical, we all play something really well, and don't get me wrong the punk ethic fired me up, but I know a tune and it's based on musical theory and let's face it, physics, fifths sound good, suspend 4th's sound good, parallel minors sometimes sound good, The Fall's music just seems to jar to me.

Sorry, no offence!

I loved the atonal stuff the Velvets did, sort of a cacophony resolving into a major or a minor, so I'm not adverse, all I can say is I just don't like it!

Found this - this was my street pic taken in the 30's are part of the Mass Observation thing, Humphrey Spender, on the right, Peel Street, Daubhill (pron. Dobble), Bolton, to the left, our back street not Back Peel Street for some reason, but Back Bantry Street, at the distance, Hammond Street. looking this pic no difference from the 30's to the late 60's.

My God some memories! The Brewery above is behind the camera. Wish I could walk those streets again, just to see, not to live, it was pretty awful really, mum, dad and us three kids all in one bedroom. No heating, no hot water apart from immersion (see Peter Kay), no bath.

My current squeeze is from Russia, and the 60's they all had inside toilets, central heating etc, she thinks I make this stuff up!

I lived at 2, Peel Street, Daubhill, Bolton, from 1961 till 1971, and whilst I know it wasn't heaven, it was real life and made me who who I am...

Andy, I agree with you there. I had company cars for years and accidentally fell into the the habit of buying new when I started buying my own. It's only in the last 8 years or so when I've realised what a stupid bloody idea it is to buy new. The only way I see that working is if you are happy to buy on finance and treat the deposit and monthies the same as you would on a lease car i.e. as a renter and you're happy to lose the money because you plan to give back at the end. Whether that's daft or not is not for me to say, but if people do that and start returning nice cars to the market at 2, 3 years old that's great news for the rest of us.

Adam - I could not agree more.
I don't really understand buying a used car that you feel has been through its "big" depreciation curve. The argument is that you could better use the lump-sum money and generate returns. But, I can't see myself doing that.

You still haven't spilled the nans on what your next ridiculous folly is, Ross.

You might be right. I used to go into Manchester regularly in the 80's and 90's and just assumed it was destroyed at the same time as half of the old city centre.
Here - this is the Tommy Ducks I remember, near Central Station before it was the MEC. That must be the Midland Hotel in the background on the pic below.

What a great picture! ( and real memory lane for me; 1980-83) Yep it is the Midland Hotel behind - stayed there last Christmas for the Christmas markets.

As for EV’s I don’t get them either.
My Jag will take me 650miles on a tankful however hard I drive it, further if I am gentle. I can drive to Durham and back in a long day but add at least 90 mins of charge time to that journey and it becomes an overnight.
I love the idea of the performance full on Tesla can deliver but they just don’t cut it in the real world.
