Tesla vs Ghibli

I cannot see for the life of me why they put a Tesla up against a Ghibli. Chalk and cheese doesn't cover it. Sure, the Tesla performance is way ahead of the Ghibli and it is more cutting edge but it's still a total mismatch. To prove it, If you get one, come down to Modena with us and see how it compares across Europe. Btw, in the real TopGear way, we won't be waiting for you to charge up, so we'll see you on the way back.

I am not about to move from my QP5 but think I understand what they are trying to do... basically saying the Tesla is a step change in motoring, comparing it to something that stirs traditional motoring passions (a Maserati) and suggesting the 'world' may be ready to move to a new idea of what motoring is all about.

I don't happen to agree but found it an interesting question...

I'd have a Tesla, it has a good range can reach Manchester from Bournemouth, and with their supercharger station popping up in the USA I'm sure Elon would do the same in the UK. They have had a few fire issues though, bit like the 787!

Sounds great getting from Bournemouth to Manchester, but how much longer would it take to get from Bournemouth to Glasgow?

Sorry to have to make this my first post (i think), but what does Tesla S have to do with any Maserati ? A Tesla S won't make up your mind to drive to a meeting when you have Skype as an alternative but a Maserati will..

The Tesla does not look too bad a car, but the range has still to be considered as poor, if it could be charged on the move somehow, it could start to be a contender for general motoring..!!

Purely electric power should be kept to motobility scooters and milk floats.

Well I have to jump in with a vote for the Tesla here - not over a Maserati though, I'll always love the V8 burble and growl from my 4200, but I do also have a Tesla on order. The test drive was very impressive, it's extremely fast, with huge torque, and the car itself seemed really sorted too. It'll replace our slightly ageing 4.2 Audi A6.

Perhaps I'll bring it to Llandow next year so we can all compare properly!

Cheers,
Ben.

The Tesla is nearly a good looking car. It's at a tipping point between bland and special. I've seen a few round the Netherlands (which is well equipped with charging stations) and I saw two NL-plated ones which had come off the ferry at Harwich last week. If your purposes suit a Tesla, tuck in. Mine happen not to. I'd be upset if they did.

PS - Christian, a warm welcome! And I agree completely with your comment.

Well over a year I did a bunch of research which concluded in me buying a 2009 Qattroporte Sport GT S, 2 months ago. I get the Tesla it was on the list, but it feels more like a gadget not a car when you look at the essence of a car, gadgets tend to be trendy like iPhones... for a while. If you compile a list of things you get from your Maserati, I believe a Tesla S won't tick any of those...

I don't get the Tesla, but it looks like we have ended up with the same conclusion via different routes.

Great thing about the Tesla is how cheap it is of you buy it via a company. I reckon it roughly halves the price - including getting 21% corporation tax off the price, and off all costs like servicing and insurance, and VAT off servicing, insurance, accessories etc too. And no personal tax on me for the first year either.
