Hi all. Very close to pulling the trigger on p/ex my 2005 QP in for a 2010 merc S65amg. Agreed a price and while not great on the QP as a price to change numbers stack up.
Merc is awesome over 600hp and sooo luxurious. Still something inside me feels that maybe not as "special" which always attracts favourable comments especially with the Larini rear boxes. HELP!

Modern Mercs are clinical and German, yeah they do everything well (you might even get one without build issues), purely personally, they do nothing for me, no soul... the AMGs sound good (only at decent revs), that's where it stops for me... and you'll join all the overlooked cars in the supermarket car park... boring... yawn...

mercs all seem too grown up for me. Imagine them lined up in pecking order at a golf club. With this one you might be made captain!

Is it an age thing?

I'm sure the Merc is a lovely car and very impressive in many ways. But I wonder if it might just lack a special something.

It won't be as special as the Maser regardless of how good it is - after all it's just a bigger faster Merc

The S65AMG is an amazing piece of kit and will pull you face off power wise compared to your QP as I'm sure you found out.....To many cars to own in this world before we die so it if feels right then just do it...YOu can always come back to the Maserati when you have got the others out of your system..

I agree with andy here. Yes the AMG will likely be better build quality, yes it will be faster and will probably hold its value quit well......so get it out your system then get a proper car (3200 of course ;))

I was so sure I wanted an AMG C63.

But when I went to drive it I felt it was almost too accomplished and comfortable. It was just click, click, click and point and steer.

My Maserati on the other hand you have to respect it and adapt your driving style to drive it smoothly. It is much more raw and involving and much more enjoyable to drive.

To sum it up. My wife would buy the Merc.

Just jumped saddle from a German horse to ride Italian again.

Most likely that Merc was like my Teutonic ride: quick, solid, held its resale well and reliable.

But I never felt engaged with the car. And it was just another Audi mobile amongst the sea of others.

The Maser feels truly special.

Your choice and your rules of course though. Could do a lot worse than a Merc.

I have had an R129 SL500 then SL60AMG and a brief ownership of an R230 SL55 AMG last year. The SL500 was smooth but soft and dull. Very capable car though just dull. The SL60 AMG was very rare and pretty special...at least to me and gutted now I sold it. Loved it and still do. At least it went to a fanatical Merc collector owner who will look after it.

The SL55 AMG was my attempt and replacing the SL60. It was ridiculous as far too much power for the chassis. Very little mechanical grip and slip sliding all over the place in dry or worse in the damp/wet. Hated it and flipped it straight out. Loooked at E55 AMG as well and I think Merc have lost the plot and gone too far. Fantastic engines and noise but silly cars now IMHO.
I had an E60 M5 for a bit that made the AMG's look way behind. Really very very good.

Went into a TT 3.2 V6 S-tronic then 987 Boxster S in a quest to get something I thought I was looking for. I have found what I was looking for now in the 4200!

Can't vouch for the QP as have a new shape Jag XJ for work which is really really really very good. The Maser is giving me what I wanted all along...a feeling of something special at any speed even very slow. None of the others gave this except SL60...you had to be 75-100% on the gas to get some interest going.

If your QP is about to need a clutch, brakes, tyres, a service, etc, then why not. The Merc will be nice for a change. You can always get another QP later. Maybe a late GTS. Or even a QP VI.

I should add, I'm on my third QP V. I keep trying other things in between, but then swap back. But sticking with just one car for ages would bore me. Give the Merc a go, I say.
