Thats interesting about your police, what country are you in?I think most of the posts here refer to straight through pipes from front to end but as far as I understood the question was regarding the end boxes.
I had 3 types of straight through end boxes mounted on my 3200 GT.
First were OEM rust removal mufflers.
After 65.000km’s the inner stuff of the mufflers was rusted and blown out. Completely empty! The sound was nice but at some frequencies it sound like an empty can of Pepsi.
Second was a plain straight through with just two Y-pieces. That was probably even 10kg weight reduction. Sound was louder than the previous but a little metall’ish.
My favorite straight throughs are the Fox stainless steel boxes. They are basically straight through, but the pipes have a special kind of perforation inside, surrounded by damping wool.
That sound is addictive! Lots of soft bass at low rpm and screaming when it comes to 6000rpm.
They also look stock and did not alarm the police in the last 5 years.
Here the police is very strict with regards to loud noise.
They will measure the decibel compared to stock and if too loud, they will collect your license plates on the spot and getting them back is not an easy task.
