Stereo removal in 4200

Hi all,

I have what I think is an intermittant contact in the on-off button on the stereo on my 4200. When changing volume it often goes up not down when you turn it upwards, and vice versa. It makes it "interesting" to change the volume - but it does generally go right in the end! Also, when it's cold outside the power button is completely unresponsive (for both volume and on/off) when I head out in the morning, and the radio turns on for a minute then off, then on then off. Once I've been driving a few miles the button fixes and works again. I'd forgotten about that last problem, but it's re-emerged recently that the weather has turned cold again.

So I'm thinking either it's a dodgy button which gets worse in the cold, or I have a playful poltergeist.

So, before I start investigating, does anyone have any experience of removing the stereo from a 4200 - is it easy enough? I've not started looking for the screws yet but assume I'll find some when I start looking...? I'll be ready with my WD40 hoping it's that easy a fix once it's out.

Cheers,
Ben.

before you remove the head unit, it could be worthwhile getting a can of compressed air and blasting air through and into the head unit to blow out any dust. it could just be dirty contacts.

you can get compressed air from any computer spares shop, it's what they use out for cleaning motherboards etc...

Ben,
That sounds like it might be a dry joint on the circuit board by the switch unit. I don't know how to get these out, I am at Autoshield in the morning, if I remember I will ask. I can't see any screws so I am assuming it's clips of some sort. If it is a dirty switch, you can use as JDM says, compressed air, or a product call switch cleaner, this you have to spray on to the rotary section of the switch at the back for the best results.
Cheers

Thanks for the ideas - I have some compressed air so will give it a go. If that doesnt help then I'm hoping there are some fixing screws under the little cover beneath the gear selector - if not I don't really know where to start taking it apart. I suspect there isn't a Haynes manual for it!!

Not done this myself but the unit comes out by popping it out. On the left hand side of the screen unit, level with the "7" button there is a recess which allows you to pop in a flat blade screwdriver / trim tool.

Taking the unit apart looks to be precarious. 13+ screws and spring clips.

Pics available on other forums.

Good luck!

Nando, do you know who did this guide?

The reason I ask is that it is clear that the person doing this was replacing all the button that had worn off, so would be interested to know where you would buy the buttons from.

Hi Matt,

It's a U.S. company that specialise in refurbing worn out buttons, a particular problem in very warm US States. They originally just did Ferrari's.
