Luckily it worked for me today. It was a close one.
I was stuck behind a slower driver, followed him through a couple of villages and the winding D roads between them. I wasn't in any particular hurry and would happily have chugged along behind him but there was a white Dacia up my chuff. I tried giving the Dacia a couple of left-foot dabs on the brake but he still stuck to my rear like glue.
I know the proper advice here would have been to pull over and let the clown past but we don't do that, do we? So when finally an overtaking space presented itself how could I resist two downshifts and roaaaaaaaaaaar?
The road was clear, beautifully smooth, downhill, and the QP was just begging to go.
As I started the overtake I was just thinking this would be the sort of straight
Les Flics would target. I was mindful of this thread and then when I saw an oncoming car, way off in the distance, flashing his lights I glanced at the speedo and thought a bit of restraint might be in order. I dabbed the brakes and shed 50 kph - it's amazing how easy it is to have gathered speed in these cars.
Sure enough when reaching the end of the straight, hidden in the shadows under some trees on this bright sunny day, was a well concealed blue shirt standing behind a tripod.
50 clicks over the limit is very bad news in France - that would have been a dampener on the hols - sometimes a sixth sense is necessary.
