Speaker upgrade

So it looks like change the fronts for 6.5" component with tweeters and crossovers. Change the mid read with a 5x7 2 way coax, and replace the rear shelf with 5.25" component subwoofer only.

Not quite Matt - the rear shelf speakers are tiny and so cannot deliver any bass whatsoever - these aren't subwoofers. A subwoofer is usually a minimum 8" diameter and up to 18" in some cases and is dedicated to delivering bass. I'd never bother replacing the speakers in the rear shelf and would in fact disconnect them. They are too small to be of any benefit to those in the front seats and fire directly towards the rear of the car - pointless!

Thanks Enz, the ones I am looking at are the Vibe Slick

Vibe speakers are OK, but definitely in the budget range. Because of the space issue in the front doors you are quite limited in manufacturer choice, but I would suggest you look at Infinity - much better than the others on your list IMHO.

Infinty are definately ones to consider, how about Boston Acoustics? I think Crutchfield.com has otpions for car audio bits that is helpful................

Well, sorry I have been offline the last day or so, took the car to bits and have been phoning round the south of England trying to find some speakers. I ditched the Vibe idea in the end and was going for JL, not cheap, £330. In the end I went for a matching set of Alpines for £220, plus some Dynamat.

Just put in the rear shelf and rear quarters, and its absolutely brilliant, just what I wanted, so well chuffed, and I still have to fit the main component front speakers. I have had to turn down the bass to minus 5 then put the loudness on, and it thumps away like a good'en.

Maf, you are correct, the rear shelf 5.25's are pants.

I have stripped my car to bits, and photographed at every stage, full write up to follow.

I went for in the end:

Front: 6.5 component with x overs and separate tweeters
Mid: 5x7 2 way coax
Rear: 5.25 2 way coax

Out of all the old speakers I took out, only the fronts looked ok ish, the mids and rears are an utter joke.

In case you haven't already applied the dynamat -
make sure every panel you're going to stick it to has been cleaned and wiped down with thinners/something suitable. Then use a hot air gun or hair dryer to warm the dynamat up before attaching it otherwise it will more than likely fall off at some point in the future. Use a small roller (wallpaper seam roller bought from any DIY shop is perfect) to ensure the dynamat is firmly pressed into every contour. Again, if you fail to stick it well it won't do the job properly and will either start to come unstuck or fall off altogether. Take it from somebody who found out the hard way a long time ago......!!

BUMP!

Does anybody have any images of installs?
I want to achieve something closer to my Range Rover from the audio system and am currently considering components.

Thanks in advance

Yes I did a full pictorial in the how to section. I'll see if I can look it out for you.

Thanks for the link Conaero, very much appreicated and it looks like a good comprehensive build.
Does anybody know where the amp is located? The system I have planned will cost a fortune and only I can be sure that the job is done to my satisfaction hence why I will be doing it myself.

The amp was optional and believe it lurks in the boot behind the near side rear quarter panel.

That's a good question but I would thin twice about using it! The battery is in the boot and so power is easy to get. Getting the cables to and from the front isn't all that difficult just a bit of a pain.

Took me about three hours to do a neat job and well worth the effort.

Where abouts did you route the cables, centre off car or down the sills and is the stock head unit easy to remove and how many outputs does it have ? Cheers

I have a 3200 so it's slightly different - I've replaced the std Becker unit with something better that suits my needs.

I ran the cables down the drivers side sill - under the parcel shelf on the rhs to the left of the speaker is an easy route that I didn't see until afterwards! Plenty of room for cables there too without cutting.
