I sorn a couple of cars since over certain periods they are garaged and have no road use. Which probably adds up to one car tax disc over a year.
It would be good if like family policy car insurance, we could have family car tax.
If your MOT has expired, it needs to be road worthy and insured. The DVLA Link, and the bottom line is you can:-
https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot
You can’t drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has expired. You could be prosecuted if caught.
The only exception is if you’ve already booked an MOT and are driving your vehicle to the test centre.
On a similar note.
What I find ironic is that we have to Sorn our vehicles. Yet what I did not know until this year was that a car dealer can legally de-register a used car, and still drive it about taxed or untaxed, and use it as a their own run about prior to selling.
I currently found out I had been driving my wife's vehicle up and down the country which was not even registered for nearly a year, and only taxed for a small amount of it.
This was due to the vehicle being resold with the previous owners short amount of tax, even though the car had been deregistered with the DVLA nearly two months before the sale and the correct procedures not being followed by the main dealer.
It also seems the main dealer sold the the car on, and not even bothered sending off the log book and registering the new owners details with the DVLA.
Although the buyer was told, when collecting the car, the vehicle was fully taxed and the main dealer would sort out the log book. The buyer believes the car is taxed and registered with the DVLA, but the unsuspecting drivers of the vehicle are left to sort out the mess and distress after the DVLA later impound the car.
Once the car is released and registered in the rightfull owners name, DVLA fines start to arrive due to unwittingly driving without Tax etc. So far they are nearly £500 out of pocket.
Having never bought a car form a independent dealer with less than 6months tax, I would atleast expect a main dealer vehicle to have 12months tax, when they say it is fully taxed.
The DVLA system is wrong, and the main dealer is also at fault, leaving drivers out of pocket.
