Can't tax it without mot...you are allowed to drive the car to and from a per booked mot test. I've done this a few times with only one problem and that was sorted at he road side with a quick call to the testing station.
If you are court by a mobile vosa van camera for no tax then just go to court with the relevant mot docs and it will be sorted, or just send the details off when you get a letter from them

I sorn a couple of cars since over certain periods they are garaged and have no road use. Which probably adds up to one car tax disc over a year.
It would be good if like family policy car insurance, we could have family car tax.

If your MOT has expired, it needs to be road worthy and insured. The DVLA Link, and the bottom line is you can:- https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot

You can’t drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has expired. You could be prosecuted if caught.

The only exception is if you’ve already booked an MOT and are driving your vehicle to the test centre.

On a similar note.

What I find ironic is that we have to Sorn our vehicles. Yet what I did not know until this year was that a car dealer can legally de-register a used car, and still drive it about taxed or untaxed, and use it as a their own run about prior to selling.

I currently found out I had been driving my wife's vehicle up and down the country which was not even registered for nearly a year, and only taxed for a small amount of it.
This was due to the vehicle being resold with the previous owners short amount of tax, even though the car had been deregistered with the DVLA nearly two months before the sale and the correct procedures not being followed by the main dealer.

It also seems the main dealer sold the the car on, and not even bothered sending off the log book and registering the new owners details with the DVLA.

Although the buyer was told, when collecting the car, the vehicle was fully taxed and the main dealer would sort out the log book. The buyer believes the car is taxed and registered with the DVLA, but the unsuspecting drivers of the vehicle are left to sort out the mess and distress after the DVLA later impound the car.
Once the car is released and registered in the rightfull owners name, DVLA fines start to arrive due to unwittingly driving without Tax etc. So far they are nearly £500 out of pocket.

Having never bought a car form a independent dealer with less than 6months tax, I would atleast expect a main dealer vehicle to have 12months tax, when they say it is fully taxed.

The DVLA system is wrong, and the main dealer is also at fault, leaving drivers out of pocket.

I purchased my van at the end of the lease back in January and have been phoning and nagging the dumb salesman who handled the MD purchase from Peugeot UK. Still no log book has arrived, yesterday the Met plod were running ANPR operations all over and I got pulled twice as the van now shows on the PNC as not registered or 'In-trade' meaning that Peugeot UK have sent their part off but Robins and Day have not sent the main part off.

Not a big problem with the scuffers yesterday as they were able to see a valid tax disk and on processing my license they checked out the insurance as valid so just a caution.

Fed up with this situation I called the MD and actually got through to the admin lady who called me back within 5 min's to say "Oh yes the log book got put in the file and it was all in the drawer, nobody had filled it out!" So it was completed and sent off to DVLA yesterday. Hopefully not going to be any further action...

Good luck with MOT Dem.

Hate sorn regs. Got three cars that will never see the road again. Should be a permanent sorn option somewhere.

As if by magic...

Post just arrived with the green 'new keeper' slip so I should be ok with the scuffers for the next week or so till it all catches up with itself...

Grinzzzz is it not just acceptable to 'scrap' them so they become unregistered, surely this is all the stock car type racers do? Shouldn't be a problem as the VIN remains on the PNC/DVLA but as 'of no interest to the police'.

It was a total suprise that her car was not registered and that the tax had lapsed since it is less than 2 years old, and ours for less than a year of that.

But what surprised me more is that the vehicle was not pulled over months earlier with all the ANPR equipment about, whilst driving up and down the country unware of any issues, often behind and then in front of traffic police.
