Snow socks

Afternoon all

Been a while since I've posted - apologies for my absence!

Given the volume of snow my 4200 had been grounded on the drive and my wifes quattro A3 has been called into full service!

I've not wanted to drive the Massa incase I get stuck. Had anyone bought Snow Socks? If so - are they good and where did you get them from???

After a week and a half without my drive I'm desperate for a solution!

Cheers

Mark

Nope - the estate and side roads still have condensed snow/ice that the Maserati wont manage!

Main roads are clear.

Any ideas on the snow socks????

Thanks P - seems like your replies are a weather run down of the Uk!!

I need to purchase something as it's been bad up here for over a week and a half. Had I had snow socks I want to know if I'd have been able to drive.

I remember in January finding some and asking the company for a group discount. They never got back to me and I can't find the details.

Hi Mark, Never used them myself, but they are listed in todays ST motoring supplement as a cheeper alternative to snow tyres and chains. Other than reduced speed, they have no negative comments.

....theres a video and other info on the sock site....I don't think they are suited to driving on tarmac full stop as they get completely ruined.....

Having seen them in action (on a bmw) the other day, they are great. Unfortunately I've investigated and there does not seem to be a size that suits my 3200 (265/35 18). Anybody know any different?

I was reading about these on PH the other day - they sound like they're money well spent if we're to have some cold winters. I'd certaintly be interested in a set (for the Mini at least!).

Apparently just a tiny bit difficult to get on......and can only really be used on snow to real effect.......not great on ice, and get ruined on tarmac.........

For whatits worth, I have used these several times before. Used the WeissSocks on our last Audi.

On fresh snow, they are VERY effective and not far short of teh performance of a proper winter tyre. As a "get out of jail free card", I would really recommend them.

BUT and its a big but, they wear out really quickly. If you think about it, in snowy conditions, you are likely to alternate between untreated side roads (where you would need the socks to get the grip) and treated main roads. You are never going to stop and change them every five minutes - life is too short - so you will end up using them on treated roads and you WILL do more than 30mph.

Therefore, I found that they started disintegrating quite quickly and can end up being shredded and stuck round the suspension.

So, great back up to get you out of trouoble, but no substitue for winter tyres.

Hope thats useful

Great feedback Dom

I tried to contact the company re the size for the 4200 - their email address bounced back and the phone number didn't work - not a great start!

I used my 4200 when there was a slight covering on the road just before Xmas - it was terrible. Every time I tried to accelerate I nearly span, the ESP kicked in and helped. I had a White van right up my rear end, he backed off when he realised he was about to make a White an shape in the side of a rather nice car!

So - we either pray for no more snow, we leave the car on the drive for weeks at a time, or we find a solution! Winter tyres or a 4 x 4???? What is everyone else doing as mine was a nightmare to drive??

Living in Somerset and needing to tow on a regular basis i have a 4x4 its a cheap insurance policy for many reasons and is relatively cheap to keep as its 10 years old with old school diesl technoligy.
