I have a Kiwi license, as well as a UK one, and often wondered if I could wave it at the polis but presumably as soon as they stick my name into the all seeing database it will come up that I have a UK license?

How can this work?

Don't like the big brother camera - freedom comes into quesiton and what if they do catch the one's who haven't paid - they usually still don't, at even more cost to the tax payer.... they have 'the computer' for road tax dodgers, speeding camera's i do wonder at the places these are sited sometimes!!! Seat belts - personally i agree is a good thing, having been through a windscreen, before the law - not nice! Agree insurance dodgers needs looking at.
Cycle helmets - with you Loz, - i don't wear one (though i ask my children to, kamakazee boys, though when older if not the law - no doubt they will make up their mind)

seems another costly purchase for the tax payer and not an economical solution..

Is the Kiwi license valid in UK...or can you change it to an international license? Depends which address you give!!!

I think it is valid Frank but my point is surely as soon as they do a reg check on my car it will come up NFM, 15 Acacia Avenue, Suburbia at which stage my claiming to live abroad isn't really going to fly.......?

So I guess my point is if you are in your car, registered to you at a UK address and hold a UK license (as will apply to most of us) then waving some other license won't work??

As an aside, in the good old (pre clamping) days a NI reg car in London could not get a parking ticket and we used to park anywhere we liked!

Cheers

The only way to stop an uninsured, untaxed or unroadworthy car is by pulling it over. Someone with no insurance, mot or tax would be very stupid to bother registering the car with their name & address wouldn't they? Therefore taking a picture of the offender is only going to add weight to the case when they eventually get caught, however I suspect most of these types of people go through cars every month and pay £50 or so for them....

Loz, I understand your perspective that seatbelts should be optional but I have seen the effects of not wearing one with a good friend of mine who now only has 1 eye and some hideous scarring across his face. I was brought up top always wear a belt long before it became law and refuse to let anyone in my car without wearing one. It could be argued that not wearing one does affect others, as death and disfigurement cost the health service money and families and friends of those injured something much more valuable.
I love the fact that the police now have powers to sieze any car which is not insured or is being driven by a non-licensed driver. The day that law came into place must have put huge smiles on the faces of the boys in blue - when watching the odd Road Wars type programme it appears to provide a great sense of enjoyment and satisfaction to sieze a dodgy car at the side of the road and turf the occupants out to walk home. ANPR has much to be praised for in these circumstances as the number of illegal vehicles being removed from the roads is significant.
I don't like the Big Brother nanny state revenue generation side of these things, but I suppose that as long as I keep my nose clean I am unlikely to ever be bothered by plod. The only time it's ever likely to affect me is if I (inadvertently) exceed the speed limit in a moment of error.......ahem.

Firstly apologies for the erroneous apostraphe in the title...what was I thinking!
Anyway, guess I should give my view as I started the thread...

I am all for cameras (or other measures) in areas where safety is a concern and any detterent that saves even 1 life is worth it.
People speeding in built up areas, where children play, the elderly live, dogs get walked etc...should be SHOT, the 30 (and 20) zone is there for a reason!
Motorways and dual carriage ways should be made free-ways...
that would avoid people having to undertake to get past the wnakers that stay in the outside lane irrespective of the speed
they are doing and what's behind them.
If these 3D cameras can be used to actually change some of the bad habits that are seen on the roads every day,
and improve the safety aspect, then I am all for them.
Regards,
Enzo.

Agree Enzo

The freeways in Oz worked a treat.

On numerous occasions I have followed a dipstick doing 40mph on the open road, in good conditions and then as they enter the 30 they simply do not slow down.

As someone said, inappropriate speed kills and any policing systems should be there to pick up inappropriate speed. My 3 points were for doing 80mph on a clear motorway on a dry traffic free day - a camera van on a bridge. No dangerto anyone..............

a camera that captures criminals is a bad thing...it wont ever work...
there will always be criminals ie driving with no insurance, no tax etc...
and the millions spent on this will be a waste of time....
these cameras will be making money..thats the problem against innocent motorists...
the man who does 80 in 70 areas.. will pay fines...the changing lanes without indicating might be paying fines...
all these things can happen with no malice..look at UM....

Hi nfm,
I have been behind a few of those dipsticks that are simply not aware that they have entered a different speed zone, or maybe they just don't care...
result should be the same, a 'special' present for them, involving a few thousand volts and their tenticles (for those that have them).

Where do i start on this topic tonite ;) whilst i realize the initial intentions of this idea are on the positive side , its really only a half measure,

If the powers that be really are that serious regarding removing uninsured untaxed/unlicensed drivers and cars off the road , they have got to start at the beginning , where the car purchase begins , its plainly toooooooooooo easy to by a car and drive it without the necessary , this is where the crack down should be implemeted first ,

As a regular auction attender , physical and online ive seen first hand litterally hundreds of eastern europeans/russians /east and west africans , buy £50 jobs , and simply drive them away , its sickening , and really annoys me , especially when i pay £2500 a year in various car insurance and probably half that in road tax ,

Thats without the numerous private/garage sales that go unchecked each and every day of the week, this is where the crack down has got to start ,

Car insurance should only be available in annual premiums payed up front , so should car tax and should be non refundable unless end of life documentation is provided ,

The change over of ownership shopuld be carried out, only by an approved body , ie the post office , where all necessary paperwork is checked and be seen to be in order , if its not there then the sale should be disallowed and deemed illegal and punishable by fine , if the decision is flouted

Only then can the new camera system be deemed to be fair and for the right reasons ( ie not a goverment cash cow ) close the buying loophole solves a whole lot of the conquent problems that occurr all to regularly

Enjoyed this rant , love the post Enzo keep em coming

regards loz

with you loz....there have been many people buying cars at £100 and not filling in details...
i sold a friends honda civic when he went away and sold it to £100 to a man who did not want to give me details and i assume he will take it not insure it and use it as a mini cab.....
i was young and accepted him as a buyer...not now though....sick of it...

Agree with Loz, it can't be beyond the wit of man to come up with a an ID validation process that is attached to change of ownership. You would need to make it the seller's responsibility in some way I suppose but can't believe it can't be made to work.

I think it would be fairly simple process to enforce auction houses and dealers to ensure the buyer has insurance etc. I don't think it would be possible to do this with private sales / ebay though, also where would you stand with unroadworthy cars bought for repair/restoration or spares that could be driven? I think its a good idea in principle. I think they do something similar to this in Germany, you are given number plates only when you have paid tax, insurance etc, your number plates stay with you for life, not your car.

Anyways guys, there are simple ways of keeping the roads safer without shafting the great middle classes milk cow......................disengenuous and anti-democratic.
