It's not as bright as it looks in the picture, it was near dark and my phone has boosted the brightness

Hmmm, I appear to have found my music mojo.

A slight tweak of the toe in of my speakers has moved the soundstage so it's pretty much bang on my favourite seat, which is nice. :)

What’s the theory behind not supporting the whole record?
One that’s flawed!
The original transcriptor turntable had those supports the other way up, so the record was only supported on a few small dots. John Michell had the idea that inverting them gave the record more support, so would be better (which is the turntable you see here). But of course, the logical step on is to have a complete platter, to support the whole record.
So, I don’t think anyone thinks it’s the best way to support a record, but we can agree it’s the most cool.

I’m perfectly willing to admit that this set up was chosen for a variety of reasons beyond just the sound, with nostalgia, styling and brand being high up the list. But it’s all well respected kit, made by some of the UK’s best known designers/manufacturers, having won countless plaudits.
It sounds fine to me. But my cauliflowered rugby ears are probably not the best!

For the same money it may well be possible to buy something new that sounds better. But in the same way that a £200k MC20 is a “better” car than a £200k mk1 Ghibli, I know which I’d rather have and which would give me more pleasure across a range of emotions. On the Transcriptor, even just using the knurled cylinder that lifts the tone arm is a tactile joy, so the pleasure starts way before the music even begins. And to me, that matters.

Hear, hear

I mean, for a Maserati owner to pick nits on an audio set-up...:p

I am absolutely only teasing. I'm sure it will sound awesome to just about anyone with the slightest interest.

I seem to recall something about those Michell platters being designed to support the resonant nodes of the record but......it was a long time back

Hmmm, was offered some Cord Shawline-X speaker cable second hand last week. Seemed a very reasonable price and my ancient QED 79 strand Silver Anniversary couldn't really have been up to the rest of my upgrades since.

It appears I was correct. I'm always dubious about cable upgrades (especially since it's hardly a double blind test) but I *have* tried cables that I immediately binned because I didn't like them.

These cables seem great though. Sound appears much freer and base feels even lower.

Seemed more appropriate than the jokes thread :) I may have posted it before!
