I built this little beauty some years ago, so working on my QP is usually not an issue, we also work on some very technical AG machinery on a daily basis which makes my QP look simpleImageUploadedByTapatalk1440095388.171749.jpg

I bolted some bits to this and made it into a soft top, does that count

The previous owner however did a bit more than I did

I think even in 5-6 months op you'll find it difficult to get a good GT at 25-30k without it being over the hill.

Experience & knowledge everytime for me. Main dealers, text books & fancy kit will only get you so far. Solid fundamental knowledge, understanding the source & root cause of issues is a dying but valuable skill.

We are a small IT business & 99% of business comes in & lands on our laps through word of mouth & recommends. I know my stuff work hard to always learn more & have been doing it for over 20 years. These young lads that have been in the game for 5 mins & think they know it all but know nothing make me laugh.

The auto/mechanics game is just the same only a different playing field & different kit. I don't find it too difficult to work on cars & work out issues when I need to.

Good experienced guys who know their stuff & don't rip people off are well worth supporting & holding on to.

I could sell my soul to the devil & work in the city for silly silly money tomorrow. Do I want to.....no....unless business goes horribly wrong. However many small business I help to support would suffer so I'm trying to do my bit the same.

We are a dying breed sadly.

I've decided to use a 'non recognised Maserati independent' to get my car looked after. He's two miles away from me, has all the credentials and experience and came very highly recommended. It was a tough decision, as really wanted to maintain the full main dealer/recognised specialist service history on the car but this guy seems to know what he's doing and like I said, he comes very highly recommended from someone who knows what they're talking about!

That's fine for basic stuff but you really need a Specialist you can rely on for some of the trickier jobs or SD2/3 kit to calibrate clutch PIS etc...

In the jaguar enthusiasts club all the tools needed to do the jobs are available to rent , plus with forums like this I'd imagine most if not all jobs have been tackled at some point so is the information not readily available

Is there anything like this for Maserati
http://www.ukjag.org.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=80

God above, Fiat would never let that sort of thing happen...Maserati special tools in the hands of minions!

I'm not averse to buying a repaired car

If the car's a keeper which it would be the cat issue wouldn't be a problem

I'm not worried about buying an accident damaged car because C & D are perfectly repairable it's just the insurance decided not to

There's nothing to say a good number of owners are completely unaware they're driving cars that have been in an accident, it's just the insurance fixed it so it doesn't have the mark.

I would however want to know where it'd been fixed, whether new parts had been used and want to see pictures of the damage

I wouldn't even look at a car like this because I don't have the confidence it was repaired properly

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Maserati-Gransport-4-2-V8-2006-06-/321835798942

But if the seller has documented proof it was repaired at an approved body shop and pictures I'd consider it

He's got all the kit Phil. They are a Ferrari/Aston/Lambho specialist and this guy looks after their Ferrari's and Masers. They don't advertise they do Maser just yet but plan to once they move into a new unit.

I know what you mean , I'll probably end up with a QP around 15-20k as I'm 100% sure I'll love it but the GT for me is the ultimate car, I've had a thing for maserati's since the 80s but never had the money for one until now

In the past the only reason I've sold cars is I could afford something better or I need the money, if I love it I keep it.

Ownership cost is the difference between buying and selling , if I bought a 30k GT and sold it for 20k in a few years 10k is what you lose on a 30k mondeo in 6 months

It's not just all about diagnostics....you also need first class knowledge on how these things come apart engine, gearbox rebuilds, the list is endless...

The SD2/3 bits of kit just give you a clue, the rest is up to to tech with all his experiance and skill!

Having seen the amount of vehicles he's worked on and some of the jobs completed I'm fairly confident he can work on it ,it's a V8, the basic principles are all the same and the factory manuals are out there somewhere.

after 10 years of being stood under it while he's working on it I'd find it hard to sit in a showroom while I had no idea what was happening to it

The thing you have to remember is the Maserati/ Ferrari engine's are race bred engines and are time consuming to put together and set up over a normal road going mass produced V8.
Setting the cams up can take the best part of a day with dial gauges and turning the engine over numerous times by hand.
They have to be right at the factory they Dyno run the engine's and if they don't make the power they start again.
Phil.
