Glad we only pay tax on getting the logbook for the vehicle and once they are over 10 years not a major issue.
New high performance cars a different story.
We do pay for motorway journeys but they can be avoided to enjoy the national roads but if you need to push on they are there.

What are the general costs in France Phil? I was considering getting a runaround for our house to enable us to fly in & out from Stanstead (dirt cheap flights, think I paid £15 two weeks ago flying back to U.K. from Poitiers)

Sorry Brian but you have to be a resident in France to legally own a vehicle.
I can no longer own and register a car in the UK as I'm no longer a resident there.
People have been doing it with second homes but the authorities are clamping down and if involved in an accident you are in a deep mess.

Certainly different to what I understand living here and I've registered a few cars now.
First thing authorities want to see is your Carte de séjour and unless your resident you won't have one.
To be fair there's a few Brits driving around on UK registered cars totally illegal of course.

Indeed, I can't buy and register a motor vehicle of any kind in Sicily. A pain as the house is atop a steep hill!!!

Re the 1st year's tax being over £2000, it's more of a manufacturer problem as it's in the price of the car, like extra car tax rather than VED even though that's what they call it

If it were VED as such and you'd bought a car for investment you could cash it in on a sorn but you can't

Yet another government rip-off

They want all the big polluting cars off the road, but look at it like this £735 is £14 a week approx

Anything worth having over 10 years old is over £300 to tax so for an extra coffee and blueberry muffin a week you get to drive something special

Still cheaper than smoking and way better for your health

Come on guys think what you get for your VED - potholes, non maintained roads, bus/cycle lanes, cameras, speed bumps, parking costs, flooding (drains not cleared) I could go on. Am I disgruntled you bet I am.
