How much has gone wrong with it out of interest ?

Nothing major, we replaced the rear airbags in the suspension but other than that just wear and tear mainly suspension bushes, they have a lot to put up with. We recently hanged the S/C nose, these wear overtime and get noisy, purely to make it quieter to drive.

Early Res were a nightmare but there was a distinct change from 07 onwards with 09 onwards being the most sorted.

On my 2012, airbags, shocks, seat cooling, seized caliper, dpf, oil cooler and tailgate rust. It was the dpf and constant regens that made me get rid of it

New cars are just crazy money , on another forum a guy is selling this for 5k , it's 10 year old and has done 200,000 miles 520D M Sport

This is a new 520D but 67k dearer

Can you imagine looking at a 10 year old cortina in 1990 and thinking it was still modern

New cars don't age
I think that is a very fair comment my only point of reservation is related to onboard technology with things such as apply play etc. That does age when you compare a 2020 model to a 2010. But externally I think you are on balance right.

I had a 2005 supercharged V8 petrol Rangie for about 8 years and 80,000 miles. Good as gold and completely reliable, and then sold it to another forum member.
I now have the newer Hybrid Autobiography Rangie, and 3 years and 40,000 miles in nothing's gone wrong with that either. Other than needing an (expensive) new battery about a year ago.

When it dumps loads of diesel into the dpf to turn the carbon to Ash. Takes upto 20mins or more at over 50 when hot. Eventually dpf fills with Ash and clogs it. Then it is remove and clean or replace. Any diesel left is sent to the engine oil and thins that too. So if it regens a lot it means oil change at least twice a year and it is 9 litres on the 4.4d.
Buy a petrol if you are desperate to have one. In the end it did not suit my driving style ie. Having to slow down at roundabouts and bends!

Here’s a photo of one of the sensors on the inlet manifold of my old 4.4 TDV8 - you can clearly see the caked-on carbon deposits caused by making the emissions cleaner! I also sold my RR due to the ongoing DPF issues, despite spending thousands trying to sort it. I wouldn’t rush back into another RR sadly.

Changing a stereo in an old car for one with a screen and Apple CarPlay support isn’t hard today (even possible for a 20 year old Maserati ).

I take your point but I think the onboard tech has got much easier to change in the last 2 years, even for an old car.

I need to replace my old 04 plate Audi Allroad estate (daily) at some point. Need to get my drums or load of logs in the back , and be 4X4 as I've just moved to the sticks.
Do I buy a £5-10K snotter, a Twin cab pick up, or admit that I'm sick in the head and go 6 year old Autobiography Range Rover 4.4 diesel for about £35k? At least I could watch the TV while waiting for the break down lorry.
I've just bought a 2005/55 Cayenne S for a runaround for a little bit. Perfectly decent car and £3k. Plenty of cost effective options out there. You just need to choose something many others don't want.

There seem to be 3 strategies:

  1. buy new or young used and trade in every x (say 2-3) years or 50k miles
  2. buy new or young second hand and keep long term / till shot
  3. buy a banger and replace when shot

Personally I’m a number 2 for most of my cars (young second hand), so I wait till I find the right spec and then keep it for say 8 years. But I buy private.

What do other members do?
I mainly do pretty much none of those

I looked at a few RR's but decided against it as only wanted a cheap runaround for a bit. Too much risk there.
Took a while but just wanted a base Cayenne S 3.2 V6 petrol with no air suspension. Not too much to go wrong. Had to change the boot struts but all the rest is pretty good.
Amazed how well it goes round corners compared to any other 4x4 I've ever driven.

Nice choice Rockits. We had an original V6 Cayenne, about 15 years ago. It was an excellent car - drove nicely and didn’t put a foot wrong in about 3 years of ownership. Though obviously it was new back then, so I don’t know how they have faired since.
Way better than the V8 version with its chocolate engine. I had 2 mates that bought those, and both engines blew up so the cars were sold for scrap value.
