Removal of wing mirror and painting of mirror base

The paint on the triangular black mirror mounts where the wing mirrors attach to the doors has bubbled up.

Using @lozcb 's helpful door card removal thread, I have managed to remove all the trim and speakers etc and just need to now loosen the screws which are tight as anything and remove the door card. Once done, I will have access to the wing mirror from the inside of the car.

Any tips/how to on the mirror removal and, once done, how do I then separate the triangular mount from the mirror husing itself?

Any suggestions for what primer/paint/clear coat to use?

Thanks

Further digging in maseratilife brought me back to @conaero 's thread posting Lorenzo's guide to changing the outside temp sensor.

This had the answer to what I needed for removing and separating the triangular base plate. Keeping the thread as it may help others in the future to locate the information.

Still open to suggestions for what paint to use to bring it back to new.

Well did all of the hard work for removing the door card except the retaining screw behind the tweeter won't budge. Looks like someone had tried to remove it previously as already rounded.

Before I do any further irreversible damage, any suggestions for how to get this out?

That looks a challenge! I’d cut a slot in it, but that’s too hard to do through the hole, so the only thing for it will be to drill it or try and extractor set like this:

before going extractor set route, try a narrow old chisel on the outer edge of the screw with a small hammer (lefty loose-y) to see if you can get the thread to budge, that may be all you need - easier if you take the door card off, which takes about 10 mins if you have done it once.

That's the last screw holding the door card in. Chicken and egg situation.

But will try the chisel and hammer trick first. Thanks.

A few squirts of penetrating oil will help. Squirt, brew a cuppa, drink then attack. Don't forget to swear at it too.

+1 on the penetrating oil, then use a 10mm drift punch to pein the slots back into position, lastly, grind the nose off of the phillips (around .040) bit so you can drive it deep into the screw head (with the drift punch) without the tip bottoming out. You will probably destroy the screw, but it will come out.
