Guys, have a go at your rockers and plenum with brake and clutch cleaner first, what I found is that the crinkle finish looked like it was coming off, but in fact it is just muck pushed down in the cracks, the brake and clutch fluid floats it out and they come up like new:

It says its '...wrinkle finish provides a textured finish while withstanding temperatures of up
to 350f (117c).' Does the engine get much hotter than that?

Matt, thanks for the hint - will try that first, but some of these are definitely bare areas of metal where the paint has flaked off round the edges of the rocker covers - about the size of a 50 pence piece...will try and get a picture.

I would think that it could as a diesel engine gets to over 110C i was told and the maserati run fast and hot.

Just checked and in fact it's not my red rocker covers at all - it's the grey/silver covers on either side that are flaking - not the throttle body at the front, but the parts covered with the same paint as the TB. Great to know my memory's rubbish! I can't see any paint of that colour for sale anywhere - think it's a Maserati job?
