Reading thru this post do I sense that wheel nuts are being tightened beyond the recommended torque ? Wheel nuts should never be tight. For alloy wheels 40 - 50 ft. lbs. is adequate. I agree that rattle guns should never be used.
Obviously you should all migrate to Spain, your ghastly Pommie weather even destroys chrome.

I did paint mine, then 2 years later i have zinc plated them, looks good, will have to see how long they last. You can do this your self I should create a guide how to do it

I recall that there was a debate on here a few years ago about being cautious using SS wheel bolts due to their possible fragility?

I don't remember the exact details, but I think someone had one snap and they concluded that SS is the wrong type of metal to be used in such high torque & stress applications.

I do agree though that the chromed Maserati bolts for the 3200 and indeed the GT leave a lot to be desired and you can do better than OEM

Indeed. Stainless is more susceptible to fatigue and galling. Much as I like shiny bolts, I prefer to have wheels on my car :)

I was wondering how they looked. I posted a link to them up above and may well give them a go at around £15, it wouldn’t be much of a risk.

I remember in the good old days, HR Owen would replace rusty ones gratis when the car came in for a major service or work…. those days are long gone.

This is the only photo i can find of the wheel caps. I might still have them in the cupboard if you want them for the cost of postage - will have to check I might have chucked them out

@FIFTY thanks for sharing the photo and that’s tremendously kind of you, thank you! However I have a QP V and am having my wheels re-sprayed a darker chrome colour and was going to buy the caps in a slightly darker colour to match.

If you still have them then I hope another member will be able to take advantage of your offer!
