I don't understand how you chaps have managed to get "manky" buttons. I was looking at mine tonight and they look fine:

It's a 2010 with over 20,000 miles on the clock... must be because I bite my nails... usually worrying about the next big bill around the corner! :)

I blame the previous owners' heavy handedness, my R is not great but I never touch the 1 and it does look in much better order

Ferrari/Maserati use the same satin/soft touch type paint that has the special and ultra desirable property of going "sticky"/peeling. It's also not very scratch resistant.

I think it's worse if the interior's subjected to high temps/changes in temp, but I suspect any number of other things could bring it on too.

At least there's not a massive amount of it in a GT. An F355 has all sorts of panels painted with it.

And the 3200 - as well as the buttons, the air con revolving controllers are made of the stuff too - very nasty

Mine at 15000 Kms has tiny wear on the R button. I know why: the natural position is to press it down with the tip of the finger, the finger nail tip scratches that soft touch stuff in the process. I was thinking to cover mine with some of that 3m Carbon weave film, it might even let the back light through. I don't need the "r" and "1" symbols visible to remind me what they do.
