Ok. On the subject of shirt numbers, what year did shirt numbering start on the back of football shirts?

Do you mean the first time there was a match played where the players had numbers on the back of their shirt, or the year when it became more normal / accepted?

I may be completely wrong, but I have been told that the first time it ever happened was on my birthday, 25th August**, in the late 1920’s but I don’t think it became normal, or compulsory, until quite a bit later...

** Random fact I remember being included in a quiz about what historical events occurred on various family member’s birthdays....

We've got some half priced cracked ice
And miles and miles of carpet tiles
TV's, deep freeze and David Bowie LP's
Pool games, gold chains, wosnames
And at a push some Trevor Francis track-suites
From a mush in Shepherds Bush

Is that Ossie in yellow in this picture then?

I can only just work out that that’s a keeper :D. Found an article on google somewhere where they were asking him why he had the No1 shirt that year, hence my answer (from google I admit, didt realise it was a no no) something to do with stopping players arguing and numbers allocated by name in alphabetical order.

Correct with the 25th August. But what was the year?

One of Herbert Chapmans ideas.

Well maybe a number of ideas are reputed to have been his but most weren't Spotlights, renaming The Arsenal to Arsenal etc. Arsenal fans are keen to spout a lot of these myths but numbered shirts may well be his.

It's also reported that Chelsea vs Swansea had numbered shirts on a game the same day. Except that goalkeepers didn't have a number. Something which continued into the 30's.
