QPV Puddle Light upgrade

My neighbour has a Merc M Class very pretentiously displays the star badge on the ground when you open the doors. I'm told they were part of a 2 grand option for whoever bought it first time round.
I give you the e-bay 35 quid upgrade (for 4 lights) for the Maser' from China. Not quite the straight swap promised on the packet, so took a bit of creative modification of the original units to incorporate the new lenses into the existing fittings. A junior hacksaw, dab of impact adhesive - bosh

Rather pleased with that :)

I’ve been looking at these for a while on amazon. There are a couple to choose from for the GT, I like them.

..you know you want to.... If they genuinely do straight swap, it's 2 minutes per door. 1 of those is bending down and trying to stand up again.
If they don't, it's probably half an hour faff per door to modify the old one.

OK as promised, here goes:
Order part and admire the expensive looking packaging they arrive in befitting the marque

Remove original item from the bottom of the door and remove bulb holder:

You then need to make 2 cuts with a junior hacksaw making sure you leave the clip end face panel in place - thus:

mTkQXTAb.jpg

Then remove the lense - this is pretty well stuck in around the edges and I'll be honest it's pretty much impossible to remove without butchering it to break it free from the edges. Clean edges with a smooth file and tadahh...

Next you need to remove the gubbins from this end of your new unit thus:

..and it will sit on the old frame like this:
vbkkBuKb.jpg

At this point I spotted some spare red paint lying around so thought I'd brighten things up a bit:

Test positioning:

Apply a thin bead of impact adhesive around the edge of the frame, the front end panel, the edge of the face of the new unit and end panel - leave for 5 minutes and then join together thus:
xqNWGiib.jpg

You'll notice there is a small lug on each side of the lens housing that allows you to rotate the image/lens so that it lines up in the desired position on the ground
5FtSqCcb.jpg

This one needs tweeking slightly as it's not quite parallel to the door line - you decide if you want it parallel to the door or perpendicular to the car with the door fully open - decisions decisions..

Wait for darkness to show off your masterpiece of chavness :)

Do you know I reckon they'd be a piece of cake to fit into the underside of the plastic sill covers...........

Cheers
Ian.

Anyone know if there are some available for the 4200. The shape of the unit in the eBay link certainly looks similar?

On my GC the door light fitting is 7.5cm long in total (inc the surround) but the clear bit is 6cm long. So, will these Chinese jobs for your QP also fit my GC? Fingers crossed.

I'd be amazed if Maser bothered to use different door lights on the QP to the GT or GC, so I'm imagining they will fit.

OK dimensions of the these new ones are 7cm long end to end. Trimming the tag off the front makes them exactly 6cm long - so they sit quite neatly on the old frame. They are 2.5cm wide - again this seems to match the width of the previous clear lens to sit on the frame. They are too narrow to sit in the door on their own as they fall through - hence attaching them to the original frame works just fine.

Thanks Ian. I'll order a pair and give them a whirl, hopefully confirming them okay for GT/GC cars.
