Not sure whether this has been posted before, but anyone with an early photo driving licence should check the small print. It has an expiry date! Ten years from issue. If not renewed you're driving without a valid driving licence and liable..... up to £1K!!!

Yep, that's why I hung onto the old 'paper' type. I'm dreading the day I move home and am forced to use the new type :(

Replaced mine in Feb due to this, can't remember if I had to pay for the privilege or not.

Oh I'm sure you did. You see I'm from a country where you have to renew, and pay, every three years. When I first moved to the UK and Her Majesty's Government kindly issued me with one which is valid until I reach the age of seventy I thought 'what a great country'. Of course bit by bit this same government is discovering all the small little revenue raising scams other governments had already been exploiting.

Doubtless you paid to renew, and doubtless the 'administration fee' will keep increasing exponentially over the years. Just like passports.

£10 to renew I think I paid a couple of years ago.

I always had just the paper license till I worked in the USA where to hire a car you had to have a photo license unless you wanted an argument with the Hertz desk clerk....

Got to love their points scheme though if you are hiring regularly you just got upgrades all the time! When the wife & kids went out on a band gig I booked the basic compact and wangled upgrades all the way to a Mustang convertable!
