I’ve (mistakenly) commented on Pistonheads and had the usual ‘they’re expensive, it looks like a rover at the back, etc, etc,….’

I mistakenly commented on a 996 thread that I decided to get another maserati because the bork factor of the 996/997 engines is just too much for me. Genuinely have more faith in a decent gransport than a 996/7 and will look much cooler in the process.

I'm interested in this bit, taken from recent PH guide to the GS (though mine is 4200 facelift):

"The factory shocks were Sachs items that needed reconditioning fairly regularly. Replacing them with a set of KW V3s delivered very worthwhile improvements."

I've not heard of shocker refurbing on my car. However, I was out recently with a friend in the back seat and (non sport mode - I know, sorry) the rear suss appeared to be wallowing a lot, bottoming out even.
I was thinking of changing springs as a result.

Should I be looking at shocker refurbished as well?
Also never heard of KW shock conversion, what is all that about? Is this deleting skyhook? Which I'd rather not do?

The feedback on this will be interesting. I have just come back from a 30 mile cross country blast on some favourite roads over the Wessex Downs (I needed to buy some fuel) and was so impressed by the suspension and steering on my new GS. It has only done 27k, which I am sure helps but it is 16 years old. Many used cars are in desperate need of new dampers and I wonder how many keyboard warriors talk badly about cars because of tired dampers and incorrect alignment? As amazingly well built as Porsche 993s were, they started life on dampers that were well past their best by 45k miles. Switching to Bilstein PSS9s was a revelation. I wonder if there is such an option for the GS. I am now going to find an excuse to run an errand this afternoon in the GS. Perhaps 6 pints of milk in the fridge is not enough......

I would imagine it’s possible to get some aftermarket coliovers with switchable damping, that could be interesting.

An expensive dual reservoir type setup might be an impressive upgrade if well setup.

There are a lot of cheap and naff coil overs out there though.

I’m not always a fan as the threads and locking nuts can corrode/seize up.

When I ref re-freshed my Z3M Coupe I went for oem plus Bilstein dampers, slightly lower progressive springs and updated anti roll bars. A great compromise setup and well accepted to be better than a set of mid price coilovers, a lot of people actually switched back. The BMW did have Mac Strutt a up front and a crude swing arm at the back though.

I was surprised to see that the GS and 4200 have a sort of threaded coilover shock as standard; with the double wishbones that’s pretty impressive.

I noted this morning that the highly regarded Maserati specialist AS Motorsport in Rotterdam sell this, which may be a good option to consider. https://as-motorsport.info/shop/en/home/251-v3-coilover-kit.html
Anyone tried it?

I don't think there was ever an option to re-furb the shocks. I stand to be corrected

There was by Premier Performance Car Parts and i think David Askew could also arrange at one point.

No idea if they are still offering the service though.

I think it was a vanishingly short period. I had a long conversation with David and he couldn't. But hands up any GS owners that had their shock re-furbed? ;)

Racking my grey cells. Iirc it wasnt 100% guanteed that they could be refurbed. So it was a take them off send them off and then wait for the report back if they could be refurbed or not. If you sent in 4 shocks and only 2 could be refurbed it was obviously an issue.

There is a thread somewhere on the forum about it. Again im not 100% but i seem to recall they had to be sent to Ireland. Will have a look and see if i can find the old thread.
