Most older UK cars will show some signs of surface rust underneath. I always try to get my cars up on a ramp at least yearly to check and if there is any deterioration then I get it treated. I use to do it myself when I could borrow a mates ramp and its quite satisfying rubbing down and repainting and you always get a sense of achievement when its done. One of the m ain reasons the new garage will have a ramp installed.

when they do an mot they only report the rust that they can actually see, what needs to be done is that the covers/wheel arch liners need to be removed for a proper inspection, i knew of a QP that passed the MOT without problem but actually had a badly corroded front subframe which needed immediate replacement.

you are perfectly correct about "what can be seen" I've come across a lot of MOT reports where although passed the advisory does state " not possible to inspect due to covers" suppose it covers their 4rse, that's the problem with underbelly covers, sill covers, look nice but can hide problems

Totally agree and as someone who tested for a few years you have to cover your backside.
People forget that the test is for a minimum standard and the tester can only see what's visible nothing can be removed.
I used to love it when people would leave the locking wheel nut and service book on the passenger seat for a £35 MOT.
