I am still getting used to them.. They seem ok so far.. I had a BMW 420 courtesy car whilst it was in and their paddles are attached to the wheel which made this counterintuitive on roundabouts!
My QP V doesn't have the shifters & have been looking at retrofitting when I get the time & some cheap parts pop up on EBay. The stalks seem too far away so I can say that the stalks are likely in the same position on both paddle & non paddle shift cars. I'll take some measurements when I'm next in it.The column sounds like it's different in that the indicator is further away from the wheel than the wiper stalk. Not sure if it's the same on the non paddle version?

Well after a few weeks I can say I love having the shifters. Where I find them particularly useful and something I hadn't thought of, is when entering a motorway or changing lane, when you put your foot down and usually get that auto "lag" as it decides to change down, you can now just flick it down before you make your move and it eliminates this (I know this is possible using the stick but never did)..
They are also good on the twisties when you want to "push on"
