I found interesting how Mercedes seems to be following the recipe that Polestar 1 launched earlier. That's an even heavier 4 cylinder hybrid.

That’s an unbelievable amount of hardware in one car. Secondary prop shaft to take drive from the rear axle to the front wheels? 469bhp from a 2.0, with an electrically spooled turbo. Not surprising it weighs as much as a small moon.

Crazy. Some are clearly losing the plot. I thought the E43 I just bought was a compromise with its V6 motor. A 4 cylinder! However the biggest issue is the 2111kg!!

I'm surprised how light and agile the E43 feels, especially as an Estate. Surely that new C63 isn't the way forward. My thoughts are things need to be lighter not heavier. That helps emissions and fuel efficient surely more by not carting around half a ton to a ton of excess weight .

Never thought a c class would ever be heavier than a QPV. Where’s it going to end, will we end up with 4 ton shopping cars with 2000hp?
Tech is being used the wrong way, it should be used to reduce weight, and therefore less power needed. That would be progress.

Surely a way to be more energy efficient is to reduce the weight you need to move, I remember an the old Top Gear, William Woodard era, one of the tips was to remove excess weight from the boot and that was from a Cortina or Austin Maxi both of which were around 1000Kgs

The problem now is that the efficiency is muddied by the different methods of energy conversion. If adding 500kg also allows you to add a form of energy transfer that 98% efficient (electric) rather than 40% (the petrol bit) then it weighs more but consumes less. Totally counterintuitive to 1980s Top Gear presenters!

And of course, 'Range Anxiety' is causing manufacturers to put batteries far larger than needed into that shopping car.

The downside being momentum in the event of a smash, tyre wear, road wear, the sheer volume of components being shipped around the world to build and maintain the car. etc etc

Too true. It’s not a good thing, just a sign of the times!

Aye, it weren't like that in our day, Zep. Kids these days don't know they're born, PlayStation generation, wouldn't know a hard day's graft if it punched them around the head. And so on.

If a car is heavier not only does it need more energy to get it moving but it would wear the tyres out quicker. Zero emissions, my ärßé

No rules on cars for the wealthy, it's a tech race, who's got the most, none of the manufacturers really care about the environment, all they care about is profits, if there was a market for a £100, 000 coal powered car they'd build it.

All far too complicated.
Don't understand even my wife's Golf GTD when it is still alive on the drive doing a regeneration emissions cleaning up cycle or something on its own!
I was told off by a bossy petrol station attendant the other day in my relatively simple petrol M140i. "Turn off you engine" "it is off!" "No its not" "yes it is!" Simply because my windscreen wipers where still going, which only shutdown along with the radio when you lock the car, unless you double press the stop/start button.

A 50% efficiency of the power plant would have to be added.

In this case it’s not plug in in the normal sense, so it’s regenerated energy according to the article. As for the stuff about electricity, I’m not going there, again, again.

Yep that is an annoying bm trait that is just not required.
