Ostentatious? Hmmmm...

So I was talking to a friend of mine about Maserati's range recently. He made an interesting comment that he would never buy one today as they've become too ostentatious.

Seriously???

Well okay, the front grill is menacing and I guess it can be conceived as attention grabbing, but vulgar? Never, not to my mind at least.

My immediate thoughts were, he most likely can't afford one, hence the envious comments, but that was quickly dispelled when I recalled he owns a Porsche Speedster. He also drove a Maserati Mistral in the 70s.

Horses for Coarses and all that but was quite surprised at his comments.

Dont know about over there, but over here, the Maserati marque is still very full of mystery, but saying that the new GT over here is falling into a new breed of executive driver, coming from the German brands, and not showing the passion for the marque, just seeing the car as a way to show off in the executive car park, so your man could be onto something.

Extremelly rare on the roads her Conaero and most people I talk to either (A) Absolutely love them, mainly due to the Ferrari connection or (B) Don't know too much about them, other than that they're ultra expensive.

Just surprised me somewhat as this guy really knows his cars and has owned many of the great marques, Ferrari included.

He believes the Gransport was a shape more attuned to what a Maserati coupe should look like and that the Granturismo was designed to cater for the US market. Now, to be fair, it's just his opinion and I don't agree with him, I think the Granturismo is absolutely stunning but interesting to hear a different take on things.

Did say something that made me laugh though. "When you buy a Ferrari or a Maserati you pay for the engine. Everything else is free". lol

Agree with Matt over here....Maserati is more of a car for the descerning individual ........ Although they do seem to be becoming far more popular than they have been for...well...since the beginning.

I wouldn't say a Maserati is ostentatious, i would say if you have a Maserati you have style, Aston's are now too popular to be cool IMO and too many footballers have Aston's, i dont know any footballer who drives a Maserati but Louis Walsh does, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Your mate talks a lot of sense. The GT was designed in the bling era and does suffer from that. They seem to have gone for bling over weight reduction/power increases, for example, which is where they should have focused.

i will still probably have one at some stage but in a muted colour. The 4200/GS is just classy in comparison but the GT seems to be a mobile bank statement.

i do half agree with this...i like the gentleman image the car has over here but like ive said recently the GT has crossed over to new markets... people that never knew the marque are buying it when they get out of their jags or astons and i dont like that...
