Oh god

Did they not overheat it?
Yes they did... I had to have the engine stripped and checked and water pump replaced but all ok now.

And yes will be fitting twin carbs this year to give it a bit more ooomph.
Great little car but certainly not what you’d call quick.

I love Imps, that engine has so much potential just wasn't developed properly in the day, it was based on the Coventry Climax fire pump engine versions of which powered so many early Lotus race cars.

When I started driving back in 1979 it was either a quick Mini, Imp or MK1 Escort.
For me it was a Cooper and then the V6 Capris to start with.
Never owned an Imp or a Escort.

A friend of mine had a rally prepped Sunbeam Stiletto that had been built by a local tuning firm back in the 80s. Stupidly fast for such a small engine and used to rev to about 9k. I had a Talbot Sunbeam ti tuned by the same place that I used for sprints at the time. That was quite good fun and quick enough to make it interesting. I preferred it to the Escorts I‘d had previously, but I always had a soft spot for the first Chevette HS that I had, which I preferred. Never got past club rallying, sprints and auto tests, but enjoyed it while I did it.
