I had an 05 E90 330D and sold it with 97k, never had a problem even with a chipped engine. Now got an 08 E90 335D with 75k, no problems so far even with a chipped engine. Wife has an 04 E46 320D with 197k, no engine problems so far. Changed the clutch, flywheel and crank pulley at 185k but I thought that was pretty good. Great cars in my experience and my next one will be another.

Swirl flap issues??

I have client who bought a 320d touring (might have a 330) for economy purposes, £2k bill once the swirl flaps had been ingested made it a bad decision.
The cost of diesel tech these days in terms of expensive repairs for dmf's particulate filters etc let alone the spectre of a previous owner having misfuelled at some point and the potential for that to bite your behind does scare me.
At 20k miles a year it's probably worth the risk, but my Saab has been cheap as chips to service up to 156k, unlike either diesel Alfa with fewer miles. They were more economical on fuel, but a dearer ownership proposition due to repairs.

An ex girlfriend of mine had that problem:lol2:

Wouldn't look past a boxer or C4s 996 if it was me.

I take it you ingested them! The Boxster, although a very competent car is, IMO, a girls car for someone who can't afford a 911.

Now why would anyone buy an A3 over a 1.....Yes, I ubderstand they are well built and some are very fast but every single one I've drove had left me cold...Very sterile marque.......Can not say the same for the BMW's I've driven........

No it isn't; in Porsches (car) line up there are 911s and that's about it. Below that there are Boxsters and Caymans for people who can't afford 911s. Would you buy a Boxster if you could afford a Carrera cab? I wouldn't, for sure. They left a LSD out of the Cayman so,it wouldn't be as good as a 911. Would you buy a Cayman over a Carrera 2/S? Again, I wouldn't. BTW, all the other marques you mention have a lot closer equivalents so again, IMO, my statement still holds water.

I've just bought a 130k Peugot 406 HDi estate, it runs, pointless spending more money than I did to throw it all away on mileage! I was running a BMW 330Ci until it had a meeting with a hedge (the cause for which still remains 'unknown' but it's probably due to black ice.)

I bought that car for a measly 5k after nearly four years of ownership it's worth less than 2k, at a push (excluding damage factor, it just sold on ebay for £900.) Waste of money, I'll not do that again, now I'm aiming for bottom of the depreciation ladder models only (although, that's a gambling game really!)

Most reviews suggest the Boxter and Cayman drive better than a 911......so maybe the smart money buys them!!!

I've been lucky enough to own a Boxter and 2 911s and the Cayenne Turbo........all very good cars....Boxter was not the poor relative.

Wouldn't be put off by car snobbery and would buy a Boxter again....without any regrets.

Cheers Wattie

I agree. 90% of the ability for less than half the price. Personally I wouldn't have a Porsche, they just don't do it for me. A good friend has just bought a 997 Carrera 4 GTS and tbh, it leaves me a bit cold. Very capable, but in a straight line cannot gap me (up to 162 indicated). Leaves me through the corners but it is certainly not a quantum leap forward. I would've expected more for a £102k car.
