Anyone looking for a really nice low mileage, full history early (2002) 4200 Cambio, the guy that imported it and complianced it last year after buying it from me in the UK has been trying to sell it for 8 months (he has only done 3000km in Aus) and the price has come steadily down...believe he is leaving the country , so possibly up for a lowball offer.....cost him £20,000 GBP alone to ship it and compliance it plus what paid he paid me for it..........

20K is a h*ll of a price, it's much easier just to rent a 20ft container for say £800 and drive it out the other end.

Geeez , what does the compliance consist of

regards loz

Yes Loz, its called a lot of dodge dealers, lack of competion, and ripping the backside out of you , because compliance is a very large JOKE!! which costs about $20K what is more scarey is most doing it don't even understand the cars. the Aus gov continue to protect the local industry to prop up Holden (GM) and Ford (Aus) here in australia until they let these car brands die european cars get hammered... its a shame because australians at large could all be enjoying (real cars ) european cars if they traded for their normal values....

I don't know what its like in Uk to compare but, main dealerships charge 60% more for the same parts which get delivered with all duties paid and to my door from overseas, shipping the lot all in... they also get delivered faster,,, and thats before we talk above service rates, and the general lack of customer service and technical know how to maintain them.. current example rubber boot mat for Alfa 159, $270 AUS 65GBP UK...

I just bought my wife a new Aussie Alfa 159 sportswagon and while we were going round the dealerships looking at BMW,VW, Merc, Audi the lot you would be amased how the salesmen don't know anything about the product they sell. Neither do they follow up a possible sale or anything... its a different world. This reference only applies to about 90% of the industry you do find the odd good one... you just need to work so hard yourself....

I'll quit now as you can see you hit one of my nerves... :-( On the upside its 37c today I will be round the pool get the BBq going, a few beers, a few mates and a good movie in the theatre room tonight with the aircon on... will make my day...!!!

£20,000 for compliance and shipping sounds like an absolute nonsense figure, whereas $20,000 for compliance, shipping, insurance, import duties and taxes sounds more realistic.
Even if the cost of compliance seems OTT, there has to be something in it for the RAWS certified garages to do the work to make it a commercially viable venture.
It still works out cheaper than a local car.
Having said that, the flood of UK Maseratis here seems to have lowered the prices of even the Australian delivered cars unles it is a special model.
BTW, if you bought the 159 from Lance Dixon and dealt with Damon you would not find another sales person that knows more about their cars.

PS. 38 degrees actually and I will be doing exactly the same thing!

Sorry if it appears im giving the knife a final twist , can i ask (a) can you do the compliance yourself , say if you were a good retired mechanic or do you have to be certified , and (b) whats involved in work being done to the car

We are all doing the same thing today although I did play golf and beat the handicap by three...not bad in 38
Steve your compliance numbers are on the money. My compliance was 15,000, road tax3,000 and shipping a meager 1800. If someone paid20,000 quid then they were dudded. Mind you the way sterling is going twenty thousand quid wont get you 20,000 Aussie shortly. An accurate reflection of the two economies in my view ( that should windup our British brothers)
Loz only socalled qualified compliance folk can do the work. It involves child seat anchors, replace secondary cats, recalibrate speedo to kmh, change all fluids ,replace tyres and that's about it, so yes you could do it yourself but you aren't allowed to.

Cheers

Sub scale population, insufficient water, huge carbon footprint to import anything, government over spending on infrastructure, strong currency hitting natural resource exports. Anything else?

Oh and stupidly high import taxes on nice cars....

You forgot....great weather, one of the highest living standards in the world , plenty of water where needed ( mine and everyone else's pool as no one actually lives in the Nullabor) and overspending on infrastructure not a problem when you have a wealthy economy. sorry, got to get back to the pool....

Well on the back end of long chats with Ratbag and Geofflyn re this car she is now mine!!! Coming up on a trailer as we speak, I managed to sneak her for (what I consider) to be a bit of a steal! Usual caveats applied but Ratbag reassured me and the research and history backed everything up so I've taken the plunge. I have posted on the main site as well as I wanted to thank the ever-patient members for their help when trying to source previous cars as they have been so kind and helpful in the past.
Anyway, proud owner of the Trident badge and loving the feeling so far!!!!!
Cheers

Kind of!! Actually collected it from the transport depot on Monday but delivered it straight to my mate with the garage for the Road Worthy Certificate where it's been ever since so very frustrating!!!! Loved the drive to my mate's though....although I think I picked up a speeding ticket in the first 200m of ownership :-( Drove out of the depot, toodling along checking out all the lovely gauges and the leather etc and didn't notice the speed camera van tucked away in the undergrowth!! I reckon I was late-70's in an 80 so quite possibly have the first fine in 5 years!!! Not happy with that but utterly delighted with the car thus far.

I actually pick it up for real tomorrow night (Thursday) and then have a 3-day weekend to register it, wash it, feed the leather and generally gaze in awe at it :) Looking forward to that I can assure you!!!!

Thanks for the interest!!

Cheers

Gary
