My Next Maserati

Why are people so keen to get new cars? I just don't Understand it at all considering the depreciation. The 'getting the right spec' argument I don't think works as there are so many choices out there you can pick and choose. A facelift 4 seater strad + 50k in the pocket vs a new R8. Is there really a contest?

Depends how long you keep them (cars). I tend to buy them new, haggle hard, don't over spec them and keep them a long time. This all manages depreciation quite well. Used car margins are so high on prestige motors that you would be surprised how much depreciation you would suffer owning, say, three cars over 2-3 years each versus me owning my sole car over 6-9 years...just a thought.

PS I am also extremely fussy over colour which plays a big part especially on a car like a Maserati where you can have practically what you want.

Agree totally Bob. If you dont change cars a lot (which I can't seem to help) - I can see your logic. If I am honest, I would very much like to buy one and stick with it. The GTS is the one car I look at and think I literally cannot get anything comparable for the money - so I think its staying a while.

What I can't believe is how much price inflation there has been in new premium cars. £120k is what the Continental cost when it came out in 04 and the DB9 was £100k a year later - look at these new prices now! Even when compounded out these rises are high. If Maserati adopts this approach with the new GranTurismo then I will probably not be able to justify one especially as with the kids leaving school at the same time, I can get a nice two seater and you get a great F type for £60k new.

I don't think it's just premium new, I have been scouring for a replacement for my Passat, bought it new in 05 for 13.5k, and I am gobsmacked at the used car price market, I thought Jan may be a good time for a bargain, post Xmas sales slump but I am not picking anything out yet....
Unless I am looking in wrong places....

That's what prestige car dealers trade on. It's a form of legalised drug dealing with middle class, middle aged men looking around for the new fix.

I can't afford or justify a new car so dabble in a few cars & turn them over when needed to reduce/eliminate deprecation. Seems to work on the whole.
