.....aaahhhhh! I had you all there didn't I!

It is going...but only to the Sound Gallery in High Wycombe for the week in order to have the entire sound system replaced (well, the main head unit is obviously staying!). This place has come highly recommended by another forum member.

I love my in-car tunes and am sick of the dire sounding Bose (it's more like Alba) system so I've been doing a lot of talking with said company since they were recommended about possible solutions for the car. They've done work on another GT with a Bose system so seem to know what they're doing with the it and what results they can get.

They even put me in touch with the owner of the previous car they did so I could get their feedback on the set-up (are you a member here Andy?)...it came so highly recommended that even though the system is twice as much as what I wanted to spend, I've decided to bite the bullet and get it done (it's also fully reversible so if I sell the car, I can keep the kit).

So, what's being done?

Amplifier - this is being replaced by a JL 5-Channel Amp. They reckon this system is let down as much by the amp as the speakers which is a real blow given Maserati charge such significant money for this as a factory option (and the Bose brand seems to stand for so much).

Surround sound speakers - they're replacing the (paper and foam) front component speakers and rear component speakers (which I assume are also paper and foam) with new JL components made out of....something other than paper (probably cardboard ;))

Rear Sub - they're adapting the rear shelf to take a JL sub that'll fit in the place of the existing Alba sub. Although it's being adapted, apparently this all underneath the cover so it all remains totally hidden.

Most importantly, this install will also included a degree of additional sound deadening to ensure there are no vibrations although the basic car is significantly well built enough to take such a set up....I've been assured that it's certainly not going to be an excessively bassy set-up and instead will be a good quality, powerful sound.

Interestingly, they're actually disconnecting the centre speaker and a couple of additional rear speakers citing that they're not required. I am being told that manufacturers fit speakers all round the car to make a system sound good without needing to fit particularly good components...as I'm no expert, I can only go by the advice given and time will tell if I notice the lack of additional speakers (well, I doubt it given it'll still essentially be an 9 speaker set-up even after the work is done!).

It's fair to say that with this and the MC Stradale suspension, any savings I made from not buying the car at a main dealer have just been totally wiped out. Still, these are the two areas that will make the car more enjoyable to me so is hopefully going to be money well spent (but I could have bought that whole 430 on eBay for what this lot is costing)!

You can't fool me Andrew, i dont think you have any intention of selling it when i spoke to you at GP about it. I would never swap it for another car.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new sound system.

Well I certainly won't be now Adam - it's going to be pretty unique with some considerable additional investment (mmm.....probably not the right word there!) so it ain't going anywhere for some time.

Good good, it is investment although i am sure your other half does not think it is an investment. I was looking at a 53 Polo 1.4 the other day, said to my mum, i want to invest in these BBS wheels, she said they are a £1K, the car was only 3k.

It does sound silly when you say that Adam but you can not put a price on your pride and joy know can you.....

I'm missing my car now...it's been gone since Saturday and I got a Navtrak alert today saying the battery had been disconnected so they're definitely ripping it apart!

Only two days to wait until I get it back (hopefully all put back together properly) with it's discreet but thumping new audio system :)

....so currently raucous from the outside...soon to be matched by an equally raucous inside!

It's good. VERY good!

Firstly, so well integrated is the system that you'd never be able to tell anything different was fitted until you turn on the stereo. And when you do, the sound quality is now exceptional and I am very happy with the result. Everything is back in place with no additional creaks or rattles (except the couple that were there before....which I have now fixed tonight!) and no damage....I was quite nervous about this as most of the interior panels were removed!

So, that sound quality....the important bit! It's crisp and well defined at all volumes, the treble is clear but without being too sharp (or bright as some people describe harsh treble) and the bass is deep and punchy....not so bassy where you can feel it in your chest like the effect my Porsche gave (the sub's location on the rear shelf doesn't really allow that effect to happen in the Maserati). I even have a little knob to control the output of the sub which acts as an extra bass boost (fitted very discreetly under the steering column behind a flap) - I've set it at a level just below the amount required for the rear shelf to start vibrating so I get a nice depth of sound without having to crank up the bass on the head unit (that was always at the maximum level of 9 with the Bose system - it's now on 2 or 3 and delivering much more!)

They've also done a considerable amount of sound deadening which means even the door speakers are able to give a nice punch without vibrating the doors - indeed, the system goes to maximum volume (which is loud...extremely so!) without vibrating panels...unless of course the bass gain on the sub is turned up too much...that can send the rear shelf into spasm! Driving back from High Wycombe today, by the time I got home I reckon I was considerably deafer than I was this morning!

So, was it worth the cost of a small 3rd world country? Well, compared to what the Bose system costs, theres no comparison....this is money much better spent (albeit over twice as much as that option!). However, without a Bose system fitted to the car, it wouldn't have the sub location in the rear shelf so it either couldn't be as well integrated (such as if a sub was put elsewhere) or it'd have to do without it...and although the speakers are extremely good, I'm not sure it would sound like a system worth what it cost without the added punch of that sub.

It had a lot to live up to compared to the Bose system in the Porsche...indeed, that still managed to out-punch this one for sheer bass (but admittedly with a lower quality and significantly more muffled sound). On the basis of a more rounded sound and a better top-end (especially at low volumes), I reckon this system in the Maserati pips it....just.
