A good one.
What constitutes a good one? It's such a subjective thing.
Even the most brilliant, well looked after car can develop a major fault. It's a machine, things will go wrong, it's inevitable so I don't buy into that nonsense.
Inevitable/Nonsense is a bit extreme for a fairly reasonable stance.
A good one, I’d suggest, is one with the following:
A clean report from a recognised independent or MD.
Good spec and colour combo
Sensible mileage
Good history at proper indies/MD
Bright high quality paintwork
Immaculate interior
Recent tyres, brakes, suspension work
Sensible no. of owners
Yes, something catastrophic can always go wrong with any car, but if you approach car ownership in that way, you’d never buy anything. Buying a clean, inspected, cherished example is far more likely to result in a positive ownership experience than buying ‘a cheap one’ and then chasing your tail the whole way through your ownership as it’s been skimped on by previous owners.
Finally, the reason it is incredibly hard to find a good >2010 ‘S’ model is that there were few of them. This was because the Sport GTS appeared in 2009 and buyers bought these in the main. Also, the good ones that were out there around say, 5 years of age in 2014, are now 14 years old. As the values haven’t been above £20k for the last 10 years, many owners have been reluctant to spend significant amounts of money on maintenance, easy to spend £5k (25% of the car’s value) on a service, brakes and tyres, so very few good ones exist in the U.K. I’d suggest probably less than 20 examples out there that would be worth buying, whereas I’d think there’s around 35 Sport GTS’s worth owning. When the car has a higher value, and is the pinnacle of the model range, they tend to be owned by people who are prepared to spend on whatever is required to keep it tip top.
