Movement in the diff when reversing/moving forward - flexible pad?

Following a service today I asked my specialist to check for a slight clunking/jolting from the back of the car when reversing and moving forward (sometimes)

He put it on the ramp and couldn't see any obvious signs of wear to the supporting bushes but can only assume it is the "flexible pad" that has too much play and thus allowing movement.

http://www.eurospares.co.uk/searchResult_one.asp?S=186908&TM=3&TMo=389&TA=1&TB=20934 Item 21: Part Number
186908.

Does anyone have any experience of this particular problem on the 4200? As I would rather not throw £100 for the part plus labour at something, that isn't 100% obviously at fault.

Also the specialist said the part looks very much like one of the engine mounts from an Alfa 166 - potential follow up for our duplicate parts list.

I presume what you aretalking about is whats referred to as drive train shunt , and is a common trait for these cars to have a certain amount even from new , whether yours is adversely worn its impossible to assertain without physicaly driving/hearing it , suggest you take it to a specialist to have it diagnosed , my own gransport has had it all the time ive owned it and so did my 4200 before that ............sounds like its normal to me if it only happens when going slowly in reverse or first

Although I have only had my car a short time I have noticed this too on my 4200 particually in reverse...my car has done 22k miles only so as Loz says it looks like its a TADTS ( they all do that sir)

If it's happening as the car drops into, or lifts out of anti-stall, it might be worth having your clutch PIS setting checked. I'd be interested to know whether the reading comes back as being 'within parameter'. I do know of occasions when increased shunt has been an early sign of the clutch diaphragm springs weakening. A scenario might be queuing for a junction in first gear and moving forward just wavering in and out of ant-stall. By the time you get to the junction and you're ready to make the manoeuvre, you find the biting point isn't at all where you expected it to be. You have to press the accelerator more than expected, then accompanied by the engine revving before the clutch bites with a major shunt forward.

Thanks all, sounds like it is a common "trait" or TADTS ;), I will take it back when I have few more minutes to have it double checked but reasonably reassured until such a time.

It doesn't do it at speed, just at the lower speeds/reverse. It had a new clutch/bearing fitted by a specialist near London about 8k miles ago and it was calibrated with the correct Maserati computer, would be surprised/disappointed if that was at fault!

I have a similar noise on my 3200 auto, from park and stationary either 'drive' or 'reverse' results in a metallic 'kerching' sound as the drive train takes up the slack.
I must admit it does seem to be getting a bit worse as its very noticeable now, nothing was mentioned (by me or Giallo's) at its last service back in the summer - its not done many miles since

Kerching sounds like something you might do while fishing, or at least a serious medical problem :) My 3200 GTA does not make noises when changing from drive to reverse, or any "kerching" noise but then it's only done 35k miles so maybe it gets worse as it gets older?

Totally different drive train and gearbox set up .....thats why , im serious when i say that they do it from new , its not something that gets worn and then gets worse

I think my description of the sound has left a lot to be desired - just how do you describe a sound?
When selecting drive from park I get a metallic clunk or rather a bell like sound as the drive train takes up the slack (I assume) anything to worry about?

Different car but similar issue, the GTS has had both its rear drive shafts replaced of recent due to a 'chinkkk' sound when pulling away hard forwards, after reversing backwards.

It is a know issue and is caused by the thread lock where the spline shafts go into the diff failing. The resulting 'chinkkk' is the splines twisting in the hubs.
