In a similar spirit to the cars that offend you, I thought I would start a thread on Motoring Icons. I got thinking about this last night when watching a programme featuring the NSU RO80. So my first two suggestions are as follows:-

Citroen DS - A car that brought numerous innovations in a single package, self levelling suspension, disc brakes, new standards to handling and ride quality which would have been innovative in the decades much later than it's initial launch in 1955. Even today when you see one the style is such that it is impossible to compare in to anything else.

NSU RO80 - Similar to the DS a game changer although significantly less succesful. The Rotary engine although innovative nearly broke NSU but in my mind it is more than just the engine that makes this car a contender. Semi auto box, aerodynamic styling all help it match the DS in that it is impossible to determine it's true age, it was Car of the Year in 1967. it's fundamentally different and even today makes people go wow!

Agree on both Mini (Original) and E Type both these reset perceptions within their specific market sector at thier point of launch. The Mini is a style icon and really made the concept of small car popular. The E Type even had Enzo Ferrari famously quoting that he thought the Jaguar E-type was the most beautiful car in the world in 1964.

I think we have to include the Lancia Fulvia.
What a fantastic Competition Car and so pretty.FB_IMG_1572029965103.jpg

Certainly cultural, a key part of younger life but as Motoring Icons maybe less so …
I wouldn't disagree at all. Whereas, I'm struggling to place this one:

Perhaps both cultural and motoring icon. In this ZZ Top guise a whole new generation of hot rod enthusiasts were born.
Whereas, the '33 Coupe was a favourite amongst moonshiners and which ultimately gave birth to NASCAR.

As a Car for the people I would totally agree.
I have had a few over the years simple Fun.
I've had five Phil, all early 60's and one 56 Oval and am now looking at a 70 Karmann cabriolet at a great price (but I haven't told my wife yet!!............This is where it might be a non-starter)!!

Surprised your Big Brother hasn't put up some of his previous Renault's.
I'm going to suggest my Renault 4 should be in here as it's do blooming useful ;)

If a Reggie has a Motoring Icon I would suggest it is this as it was probably the first of the people carrier breed to be adopted as "normal" by the family

Whether in coupe (notchback) or fastback form, the original Mustang must be up there...
