I've put an x pipe from Autoshield on mine. Local garage took the original off, sent it over and it was made specifically to fit. Cost about £350 plus fitting. Makes a much improved sound - not too loud but a lovely rasp and some popping when it gets hot.

Thanks unless your video is bad quality, I can't hear the melody anymore haha. That would be too raspy for me.

Sounds good David - not a hint of any smoke or rattle from the exhaust pipes though, are you sure this isn't a still image or maybe my computer screen froze?! Nice sound though all the same

Can anyone think of any downsides about gutting the mufflers?

Well if it's anything like mine....

1) There may be a resonance. You can learn to drive round it and / or revel in it as appropriate.
2) The overrun may sound like a small war is breaking out
3) People will pull along side you on the A406, wind their windows down and ask you to show off a lot. Then they'll tell you how much they love the sound.
4) You may find yourself grinning like a total idiot when it downshifts and sounds like you're doing 150 round Silverstone when in fact, you're parking at Tesco' [1]

Can *you* handle it? ;)

[1] I'd rather have typed Waitrose but it's too far away ;)
