Mine has just started doing this too. I read somewhere it was due to the hot weather and maybe breather pipes, not conclusive though. I have noticed however, that when the howl starts, then I lift off the accelerator it goes. No loss in performance or mpg, mind you mpg couldn't get any worse I don't think :)

Not sure about whats mentioned in the links above, but in mine it was a failing rear hub bearing assembly......common fault, if it increases with speed and from rear

The problem is certainly intermittent with mine... Suspect it may be because when I put my fut down it's drowned out by the howl of the engine / the racket playing on the stereo!

Don't suppose you can recall where you read about the breather pipe issue? Conaero mentioned the same thing, above... Wonder if it's down to the heat making something expand and lose airtightness.

Yikes! My banshee seems definitely stuck in the fuel tank area: I kept the engine running and popped the filler flap open and the noise was loudest right there!

Thank you for that: mine has now piped down again, but I had an interesting tractor style chugga chugga chug through Crouch End this evening.

Frankly the wretched machine is so glitchy I wouldn't be surprised if it started burping tomorrow.

But I lurve lurve lurve it anyway :D

Funnily enough mine stopped yesterday and had a moment itself, popped it in to neutral and gave it a blast at the lights. Many frowning eyes........if only they knew what we had to put up with :)

Today... back for a bit on starting up, then it fades away... After filling up (again), not a sausage.

Or perhaps it was drowned out by the soundtrack of (first) La Traviata and then AC/DC :)
