Maserati developing exhaust-note simulation system for upcoming diesels:

maseratiquattroporteawardsedition001.jpg

If you watched 2011's The Dilemma and thought there's no way automakers would actually pipe artificial engine notes into their cars, think again. Several companies have been developing exhaust-note simulation systems, particularly for electric cars – be it for the sake of enjoyment or safety. But EVs aren't the only cars that will benefit from engine notes reproduced through speaker systems: so will some high-end performance machinery.

When BMW switched its M5 performance sedan from a V10 to a twin-turbo V8, it lost some of the exhaust note for which the model had become known, so it devised a system to pipe engine sounds into the cabin for the benefit of those inside. Now Maserati may be following a similar path.

A new report from What Car? indicates that Maserati is working on ways to simulate exhaust notes on its forthcoming models. Now if you're thinking that Maserati's engines – particularly the V8 developed and built for it by sister-company Ferrari – don't need any help in that department, well, you're right. But soon the Trident marque will be offering diesel engines as well.

The oil-burners are being developed for two new models of the current Quattroporte (pictured above) – one bigger than the current model and one smaller – and probably for the production version of the upcoming Kubang SUV (which will arrive wearing a different name). While the high-revving eight-cylinder gasoline versions may not require any aural stimulation, the diesel versions just might, and Maserati's boffins may just have the answer.

This technology, was originally developed by Lotus.
They found, if they bounced back noise, with a speaker, the noise just disappeared! So they then found they could actually have a silent car! But what they did, is get a bog standard 4 cylinder car, silenced the engine, with speakers, then altered it, to sound like a V12!
It was shown on TV years ago, on Top Gear or similar, cannot remember the programme it aired on.

As long as Maserati use BMW diesels I won't object as they are fantastic, especially the new -turbo 3 litre. 0-60 in 4.5 secs is very quick and 40+ mpg on a run.

Chrysler 3.0ltre TD, i believe. But, i would of thought, tuned up, for Maserati.
I do know, Fiat Power Train [FPT], are working on the next [3rd] generation of Diesels. There is talk of modular design, so tiny diesels, to large ones, for high end stuff. My thoughts is this. A current engine will be used, then when the 3rd generation, come online, the Maser, will get a brand new engine design.
Fiat/ Maserati, may fit the twinair system, to the 3.0 litre diesel. This, will generate more power. All to be revealed!

As long as they don't put a typical below- par Italian soot chucker in it. I really do hope they are learning from the Germans on how to build big diesels.

Your talking about VM!
Just to verify, Fiat SPA, are one of the biggest Diesel makers in the world! Iveco trucks, are a huge company. And those engines, in the trucks, are pretty good! Then you have Magirus Deutz trucks, mainly now making Fire Engines. Most Motorhomes, use a Ducati Chassis and an option of 3.0 JTD engine. Look at the company, Fiat Industrial. I have only scraped the barrel. Fiat are also the biggest tractor makers in Europe, Forlift truck makers, just to name a few!
Fiat Spa brought us common rail, but stupidly, sold the rights to Bosch. Overnight, diesels were transformed! Higher revving, quieter, better on fuel, and best of all, cleaner, and better maintenance scheduling.
3rd Gen will be special. I can assure you!

Fiat diesels are good, in my opinion better than the petrol they make.......

My friend had DMS chip it and what a result!!

Benny what do you get out of a full tank? How much does it costs to fill??

There's a lovely one with 80k that I could have for the 118d....

Its the torque that Diesels impress with. And the 335D/535D, both have brilliant torque, from a 3.0 litre engine!
Chipping is ok, if done correctly. Its much better to flash code them, with a remap. Most BMW specialists will do this, and it keeps the BMW warranty too! Seen 50bhp added to 2.0 litre BMW. God knows what is hidden in the twin turbo!!

Diesel for everyday driving is the way to go.....

I have been given permission if I want to buy any car under 20k and they will fund it for me, or keep mine and they pays which is what I'm doing, but what I'm saying is everything I've looked at, giullietta, new 118d, focus, civic, A3 all are diesels....best engines in those models

They are Dem. it's nice not having to thrape the cr4p out of it to get a move on. 100 mph at 2500rpm is an easy way to travel. 8000rpm does, however, sound an awful lot better.
