MAF sensor question

I have had a couple of CEL (P0102) which point towards the MAF sensor needing changing.
I was planning on getting a replacement from Eurospares (£130 new is less than I was expecting). Up until now there hasn't been any symptom of the MAF being faulty. Today however the car struggled to start, the starter was cranking over, but it didn't fire. I had to stop and try this a few times, then it started and ran fine. I had just filled up with petrol and looked an idiot sitting on the forecourt trying to coax the car into starting. I calculated the MPG and at 13.9 is quite a bit lower than I normally get so really hoping this all points to the MAF being to blame. Would this make it hard to start? Fingers crossed this is an easy fix, not wanting to drive her anywhere now in case I can't restart and get home.

Hmm. Well I'd follow the codes and swap the MAF but I wouldn't expect it to solve your starting problem. My recent experience is that *eventually* you'll get a CEL for that. But I could be way off bat

Struggling to find the how to guide for changing the MAF sensor in the forum now, only read it a couple of weeks ago now can't seem to find it again, anyone got the link?
That sounds more like a crank sensor.

Have you read the codes since ?

Knowing how difficult the oil sender can be to get at, is it possible to replace the crank sensor without removing anything else from the engine or is access impossible without?

Yep, last post:
I changed mine as I had hot starting issues, it made no difference what so ever.

I had the coolant temp sensor replaced at the last service. It was a diag code when I bought the car..and on recommendation from McGrath who reported a hot start issue. ( associated code included a misfire, surmised afr off as result, hence start issue )
The ECU is fairly often all over the place at start up imo. High refs, low revs..whatever it feels like it seems...
I hope I didn’t jump to conclude MAF was ok. They are pretty sensitive ! And I had reason to think it had been over filled with oil, spilling onto the sensor...?

Quick update, ordered a new MAF sensor from Eurospares. Easy to remove the old one and replace with the new one thanks to the how to guide on the forum. The throttle body was also very dirty, wiped clean with petrol. Now starts perfectly, and it is like a different car. Much sharper throttle response, feels much smoother and more powerful. I also only noticed this now it is no longer happening. Before changing the MAF and cleaning the throttle body when I lifted off the accelerator the car slowed very quickly if coasting in gear, don't get that happening any more. Might be useful to know if you are experiencing the same, I thought it was driving fine but boy is it better now!
