I thing the clutch thing when known about makes it a way less important issue( esp on a £70K car....now if you're talking about a £15K car then a way bigger issue!!!!)....plus I would have hoped by now Matt that hey would have improved the clutch quality/technology to remove it as a worry....after all how long do Lambo and Ferraris clutches last?

Drive them hard.......you've done nearly all the research....you are on the right forum for help, guidance and support...........good luck!!

Thanks Dan and Parisien..

Now to find the right one.. I see there's a Grigio / Bordeaux '10 MC on Nuvola right now, might go check that one out..

PS Dan: I guess you'll be slowing down for speed bumps a bit more in your new wheels though! V nice looking car..

Cant tell you about how they drive or clutch issues, matt and dan are best for that but i can say they are stunning cars and if your getting one it has to be the GTS!

Do you live i central london? Where abouts?

Hi stimpz

I will echo everything that was said in favour of the mc shift. I bought one a few weeks back. You can see it on the granturismo section of the website.
Sound of exhaust is AMAZING. I used to have a porsche sports exhaust on my 911 which now seems completely pants compared to this. LOOKS are stunning. In the flesh, its georgeous. Car gets alot of attention. Ive had people taking pics when i was in traffic recently. NEVER happened in the 911.
In terms of driving the mc shift. No problems at all. Its a tad jerky for first few seconds when car is cold, but thats about it.

I assume you have seen this review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4K5cgzjY6o&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Can I suggest that you need to try:

-gearbox?
-skyhook?

Theoretically that means you need to test four cars - auto and MC, both with/without skyhook. The reality will be three as I am yet to see an auto without skyhook as it is standard on the 4.7 auto but an option on the 4.7 MC.

Personally I would not choose one gearbox and/or suspension based on what other people say. Sure its great to take advice but you should make up your own mind and you can only do that by driving.

FWIW I have an auto 4.7. In sport it is pretty agressive with regard to gear changing and suspension set up which I really like. Normal is the reverse and is fine for regular driving - in and out of London?

I am told that the single rate suspension set up is mid way between normal and sport on skyhook cars. That sounds like a great compromise but it might be too soft for full on driving. Dealers differ on which suspension is best so phone around and ask.

Let us know what you buy but there are enough cars around to do some driving and find what is best suited to your needs. If its a single rate set up MC then great.

Oh and welcome!

PS You will always get more MC Shift 'ticks' on a forum as that is seen as the 'driver's choice' and only enthusiasts pop up on forums. It doesn't mean that it is the right car for you. Neither might the full auto mind!

Mine being 25% worn at 12,000 miles may give away the nature of my driving then...
Interesting that a car that's been driven relatively hard could be more desirable than one that's poodled around London in traffic for all its life.
With the Lambo I've found that I'm in the habit of selecting Corsa mode as it makes more noise (no surprise there...) and because it gives the quickest gear change. In normal or even in Sport it rides the clutch terribly, which may well go a long way towards why the e-gear has a reputation for munching clutches.

Is it right that these new DSG double clutches never need changing? How comes?

I've wondered that on DCT cars. It will be interesting to watch Californias' for that as I would guess the new Granturismo in 15 will be DCT.

Bob, does the auto have the valved rear boxes as the MC shift has.

Agree with the auto if a daily driver.

Yes it does mate but the valves only open at 3000 revs (in sport like with yours). Creates a compelling noise variance as you go over 3000 revs in 1st and 2nd.

FD do a kit to give you full valve control - even when not in sport.

Thus to sum up, if you are cool, wanna feel young and have loads of fun go for the MC shift. If you wanna maximise comfort in traffic jams
Cos you are getting on a bit, go for the auto!!

No offense bigbob. ;)

Oooh they don't call him BigBob for nothing!

He's 6'8", 19 stone and can run the 100m in 9 seconds dead, isn't that right Bob?

Too tall for the Maser - keep bashing my head on the roof lining!

I've got four cars and three are manuals so I don't mind having my chain pulled a bit. Anyway I feel it's rather cool having a Maser as a daily driver.

Thanks bigbob for flying the auto flag, I guess it's very easy to get sucked in with the idea of the MC - but I test drove an auto the other day, powerful even through the mid gears, smooth as silk and it's what only 0.1 sec slower to 60 anyway? Have you installed the valve pack bigbob? That would remove one reason to got for the MC.... :)

Car is stock but the valve switch is tempting as it cost peanuts.

Maserati life also has posts on removing the vaccum pipes and putting golf tees in them to permanently open the valves.

Nothing wrong with the MC but at 10-12k miles pa over five years or so, I felt that the auto was better for me.
