You do wonder how they rescue this mess. Putting a big battery and a 4 cylinder turbo in to replace a petrol V6 hardly gets enthusiasts excited and the 'impress the neighbours' crowd want an X5 or if they can stretch to it a Macan/Cayenne. I feel for them as it's easy for us to pontificate about things but digging a brand - however strong - out of the mire is harder than it used to be. Just look at Alfa and Jag.

This, I hope is a stopgap solution. It doesn’t excite the petrol is best contingent (no surprise there) but as a mild hybrid with a belt driven MGU it also won’t hold a candle to established competitors like the X5 hybrid. Shame.

For me since being a boy still totally fascinated and probably obsessed with the internal combustion engine and it will see me out

I wonder if they will ever recover the development cost?... would it not have been more sensible to wait until the replacement came out and put full electrics in it?
