I 'sold' a car on collecting car - im sorry to say its a big scam site. They have no systems in place and I suspect they themselves bid up my price to get it above the reserve then claimed the highest bidder did not pay. They would not disclose who the so called bidder was - very sketchy.

I ended up listing the car (a 1984 911 ) on Cars and Classics and sold it for way above my expectations. Apart from the annoyance Collecting Cars totally wasted my time over 2 weeks 'post sale'. Specifically they said the so called buyer registered a false credit card - totally rubbish as the payment company Stripe (who I called) said they pre charge a small amount and it would have been picked up immediately. So I know it was a lie! They also kept calling me to relist the car. I had to threaten legal action to get them to remove my data and details. Yep, a very very negative experience all round!

False credit card, can’t be true, every time I bid they pre authorise my card based on highest bid/fee. I have however stopped using the max bid option as CC can see your max bid meaning it’s open to shill bidding to ensure the listing sells for a as high as possible to ensure they get the maximum fee.
For example last week I bid on a car 3 days out from the end of the auction and stripe/cc had a hold on nearly £4k or until I was outbid.

I have recently questioned them about this and have told them I won’t be using the max bid option. Too often I notice bidders with no history, bidding cars up and you end up wondering if your max bid is too low.

Also if you want to view a car to do your due diligence as per their terms, they won’t allow a viewing unless you disclose your valuation of the car.

Everything is about their fee, not about the customer either side of the deal.

Those practices are so dodgy and I don't approve of them at all.

However, I can empathise with their situation if they're trying to make a successful platform, a platform which I very much enjoy browsing every day to see what has come up, what things are selling for, maybe I should bid on something etc, then it must be very difficult because you have to please both sides. You have to convince the buyer to sell their car on their platform and not via AutoTrader or the other usual routes, the only way you can do this is promise more money than what they would usually get.

Everything is driven by the cars you have on your platform to keep the buyers coming back and interested, so they are promising the world when the seller is considering putting their car on the platform then once it's there they need to do all they can to come to as close to that promise as possible.

FWIW Just sold a house via and online auction (sold after the action closed). When it was 5 mins before the end of bidding and no bids had come in, the auction house submitted a single (fake) starting price bid to generate interest automatically, which took me by surprise. It was below the reserve so wouldn’t have a big impact on the final outcome but found it interesting that it was allowed.

Fictitious or 'off the wall' bids are a feature of most auctions and sometimes that's in the auctioneer's t's and c's, sometimes not. I also know from personal experience that lots are often recorded as sold when they're not; that is to make the auctioneer's success rate look better than it really is, and it has happened with 'no reserve' lots where there is no expectation of an unrealistic outcome.

I've been around auctions (in person and online) for decades, and would not recommend them to novices.

No probs then Gaz, Ill stick it outside on axle stands as a breaker, thanks for the parts car :)

FYI, its already been inspected and its all excellent, just goes to show, mileage is not the main contributor with these cars. We have another in with half the mileage and he's looking at a £5k bill to put it to where Gaz's is.

I agree that Collecting Cars is a great shop window.

I just feel the web site and connection with Chris Harris indicates they are selective about the cars they consign and perform more than cursory due diligence which clearly isn't the case. IMHO, it's often a dumping ground for stuff dealers can't shift.

I was the seller ofbthe car (not a buyer). The auction ended and they told me "the buyer who won my car registered with a false credit card, and the transaction was void". Looking at the bidding - they allowed the bids a number of times - I'm 99% sure they bid up the price to the reserve, and hope someone who is legitimate bids and wins. I don't trust them, and would never sell or buy on there... just my experience..

Like anything, there are probably some good and bad cars there. It’s a great shop window as mentioned above. If you’ve got the time and enough experience and market knowledge to do detailed diligence before bidding you might land some good buys. I don’t have enough of most of the above so not the route for me. That’s where the likes of Mr Grace come in…

I don’t see what was wrong with the good old private sale which seems to have died a death now. All these sites are just private sales anyway with a load of suspect middlemen taking a cut.

Not comfortable with people viewing your car - trade it in (or wbac these days) and take the hit

Want a bit more and don’t mind herding a high percentage of muppets - sell private.

Trouble is I guess there’s not so many private buyers any more, but I don’t see how buying off collecting cars is safer than off someone’s driveway, probably worse, as it appears they make it hard to view and no doubt impossible to test drive.

I went to see an Aston Martin Rapide which was on Collecting Cars and arranging it wasn't bad at all.

So pleased I did go see it because the interior colour looked completely different to the pics, it wasn't in that good of a condition and the window seals seemed to have gone because there was a horrible whistling noise when you drove. You could see an actual gap between the window and seal.

It was this car for anyone curious:
